To learn if a limb or joint from one person could be successfully attached to another who had lost that limb or joint, experimenters at Ravensbruck amputated legs and shoulders from inmates in attempts to transplant them onto other victims. They also removed sections of bones, muscles, and nerves from prisoners to study regeneration of these body parts. Victims suffered excruciating pain, mutilation, and permanent disability as a result. Nazi doctors would regularly inflict battlefield-like wounds on participants without providing anesthesia to test the effectiveness of various compounds meant to quell infection and promote healing. Oftentimes, they would also apply bacteria to the wounds or rub in ground glass or wood shavings. As one survivor recalled: "They made a cut, about 10 centimeters long and 2 centimeters wide, in my arm above the palm of my hand. Today I understand that the surgery that was done on me without anesthesia was done purposely with tools that weren’t sterilized to cause infection. At the time they kept exchanging the bandages with different medicated creams. Every day they examined the cut and each time the cut was about to heal, they reopened it and started the whole thing from the beginning."

The U.S. Army reasoned that 75 Saturn II rocket launches could be achieved by the end of 1964. And with only forty of these launches needed to put enough equipment into space for the Moon base’s construction. And as for power, it would be provided by nuclear or solar energy. Water and oxygen could be extracted from the natural lunar environment. Military personnel assigned on the Moon would wear spacesuits and carry unique weapons and tools developed expressly for moon-use.
