Cassava Cultivation in Punjab
Cultivating cassava in Punjab represents a significant step towards crop diversification
Cassava, a gluten-free and climate-resilient tuber, is widely grown in southern states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
It was brought to India by the Portuguese in the 17th century in the Malabar region of present-day Kerala.
Originally native to South America, it later spread across Africa, which today accounts for nearly 50% of global cassava production, and eventually became a major crop in South India.
While Nigeria is the world's largest producer of cassava, Thailand is the worldβs largest exporter of cassava products, controlling roughly 50% to over 60% of the total global export market
It is used in the production of bioethanol and biodegradable plastics, while its peels and leaves serve as animal fodder.
