ICAR Study: Fertilizer Imbalance & Climate Change Degrading Soil Carbon Key Points: ✅ ICAR’s 6-year study (2.54 lakh samples from 620 districts) found that unscientific fertilizer use and rising temperatures are depleting soil organic carbon in India’s arable lands. ✅ Haryana, Punjab, and western UP showed major decline due to urea- and phosphorus-heavy fertilizer use. ✅ Organic carbon decreases from highlands to lowlands and is negatively correlated with temperature—low in hot regions like Rajasthan & Telangana. ✅ Climate change further accelerates loss, impacting soil health, carbon credit, and emissions. ✅ ICAR prepared an agro-ecological map to guide policy decisions and sustainable fertilizer management.
