32 My father served three tours in Vietnam. I have many of his medals and citations in a display cabinet, and I'm proud of his valor as an infantry officer in a horrific conflict, even if the conflict was inherently unjust.
Steve Slaton is running for Arizona LD-7/State House out of Navajo County. He claims service in Vietnam, the Vietnam Service Medal, status as a Cobra pilot and member of Special Forces, and other awards/honors.
1) Research reveals date of enlistment 6-29-73, while the Vietnam Service Medal was only authorized between 7/1965 and 3/1973.
2) Records reveal service in Korea beginning in Jan 1974, lasting a year. The last combat troops left Vietnam in 1973, and the last advisors in Spring 1975. I'm naturally curious where the quick tour to Vietnam came from.
3) Records reveal training as a helicopter repairman, NOT a pilot, a job held by officers and warrant officers.
Now what: Mr. Slaton should hold a press conference immediately and discuss what appears to be STOLEN VALOR, and if he can prove that he was indeed an attack helicopter pilot as an enlisted repairman, was special forces, served in Vietnam, and was awarded a medal that ceased to be awarded before he enlisted, then he should by all means continue his campaign and accept our apologies for the trouble.
If he can't - then he needs to drop out and disappear from the political world. Insulting the valor of real veterans shall not be tolerated.

Try to prepare for all options. Prevent the ones you can and plan your response to the ones you can't prevent.
Education is a big factor here. How are you getting the message across to the voters? How are you going to get your information out quickly? Do you have a central reporting method?
