In general, Vajra symbolizes two properties: diamond (indestructibility) and lightning (irresistible power). In Buddhism, the Vajra body is one of the precious bodies of the Dharma. It is the highest and is attained at the level of the Sahasrara chakra. It is analogous to the Atman in Yoga. We can say that it is our deepest essence, which is indestructible, does not change, is not born, does not die. Vajra yana, one of the chariots of Buddhism got its name from the fact that it forms an indestructible consciousness that does not change despite the amount of external information. I have heard the opinion that in modern times, all those who practice in secular life, without going into monkhood, are practicing Vajrayana, because the amount of negative information is very large. Of course this higher chariot has Hinayana(discipline), Mahayana(6 paramitas and bodhicitta) and Tantra(Channels, Wind and soul drop) at its core. There is also indeed the significance of Indra's weapon and ritual object expressing indestructibility.

So a quick esoteric film review, for you. You’ll notice, that the key to the breakthrough in the ritual - was purity of intention . . . Something Buddhism stresses deeply, in Bodhicitta, but something Western Magick is notorious for ignoring, to disastrous ends. The film shows the descent into hellish madness, given the impurity of intention being Vengeance - though in the end, she meets her Holy Guardian Angel, when she abandons Vengeance, and seeks forgiveness - both of herself, and her sons killers. It’s this softening of the heart, that purifies her - and it is this softening of the heart, which leads her to live up to her name, Sophia - Wisdom. The rites were not exact replicas of the Abramelin Rite, there was some artistic license taken … but that’s okay, because what it did describe is the grueling Spiritual Asceticism required to complete a ritual such as this. The movie also shows, beautifully - the importance of Myth in the Rite. Ritual is nothing, without belief in the Myth attached to it. A ritual is a method of contact, a telephone … if you will. But the myth is the electricity that makes the phone work. The rationalistic worldview will essentially render any Ritual you do - dead in the water. Dialing on a phone that isn’t plugged in. There is an example in the film, showing this clash of worldview - when Sophia is told to eat Toldstool. She believes the rational implication is, it will make her ill. While Salomon believes the mythic implication - that it will aid in purifying her. The illness is the expelling of those impurities. As Sophia’s rationalism begins to fracture, Salomon’s mythic worldview wins out - the “random” events, that Salomon insisted were signs the Ritual was working, fully manifest - and Myth becomes indistinguishable from Reality. We then enter into what most would describe as Fantasy - something rationally impossible, Demons & the Dead alive and present in the home, Demons invoked to be Commanded … have overpowered Sophia, and now run rampant, torturing her. But this is not Fantasy - this is Reality … Mythical Reality - finally, the veil between the two dimensions has fallen. What happens, is as real as “rational” existence - it is that openness to Myth, that allows the veil to drop, and the Ritual to take effect … however disastrously, due to impure intention. Sophia then breaks from the Ritual - the Demons having black inked the texts, and Salomon having been killed due to Sophia’s unbridled vengeance. But Sophia, having broken from the Ritual … was then Free to move beyond the mere Method … and get to the heart of the Ritual itself, the “essence” of the Ritual, beneath the exotica … the purity of her intention, and the clarity of her purpose. It is at this moment, that she achieved breakthrough - and achieved Wisdom, and with that Wisdom - Power, the Power to Forgive. Not what she sought out … because what she sought out was the Will of the “Lower Self”. Forgiveness was the commandment of her True Will, of her Higher Self - and when she achieved it, she achieved knowledge & conversion. Wonderful movie. Here’s a nice review of the film from a smart Jewish guy who knows what he’s talking about - gives you some background on the Abramelin and Crowley and the whole 9 yards. https://youtu.be/Rh8LYsrME8k

Occult Film Review and Analysis - A Dark Song

A review and analysis of the 2016 film A Dark Song. I'll be discussing the esoteric and occult aspects of the film including the Abramelin operation, Aleister Crowley's infamous invocation at Boleskine, and some thoughts on how the film deals with the Faustian trope in a novel manner. A whole video on the Abramelin operation will appear in the future as part of Esoterica's series on books of magic - stay tuned! Support Esoterica on Patreon:
