First glimpses of large asteroid due to pass soon 🌎 Have you heard the buzz about a big - very big - asteroid that'll pass relatively close to Earth later this month? Asteroid (52768) 1998 OR2 will pass at a safe distance, at some 4 million miles (6 million km), or about 16 times the Earth-moon distance. It's big - the biggest asteroid due to fly by Earth this year - and will come closest to Earth on April 29. Astronomers at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico have been studying the asteroid since April 8, as it's traveled through space at 19,461 miles per hour (31,320 km/h). The high-resolution radar image above - from Arecibo - is one of the first glimpses of this large asteroid. Charts, tips, images, how to watch online here: https://bit.ly/33ien9f Image: Radar image of asteroid 1998 OR2, acquired April 18. According to current estimates, this space rock is probably at least a mile wide (1.8 km) and maybe 2 1/2 times that long (4.1 km). Image via Arecibo Observatory.

Antares Star Antares is a bright red supergiant star in the constellation of Scorpio. Antares is 550 light years from Earth and the brightest star in the constellation of Scorpius. Antares takes its name because of its distinctly red color, which compares to that of Mars. The Greek name Antares means "Rival of Mars", the god of war. The Romans called the star Cor Scorpionis, meaning Heart of the Scorpion. However, they had been anticipated in this by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Sumerians, who for at least two millennia had also known the star as the Heart of the Scorpion. According to ancient Arab tradition, Antares is the warrior-poet Antar's star. Many of the old Egyptian temples are oriented so that the light of Antares plays a role in the ceremonies performed there. Antares was also known as Satevis in ancient Persia and was one of the four "royal stars" of the Persians around 3000 BC. It was also known as Jyeshtha in ancient India.

The dust sculptures of the Eagle Nebula are evaporating. As powerful starlight whittles away these cool cosmic mountains, the statuesque pillars that remain might be imagined as mythical beasts. Featured here is one of several striking dust pillars of the Eagle Nebula that might be described as a gigantic alien fairy. This fairy, however, is ten light years tall and spews radiation much hotter than common fire. The greater Eagle Nebula, M16, is actually a giant evaporating shell of gas and dust inside of which is a growing cavity filled with a spectacular stellar nursery currently forming an open cluster of stars. This great pillar, which is about 7,000 light years away, will likely evaporate away in about 100,000 years.

The known universe is made up of 50,000,000,000 galaxies.🗯

It takes a photon up to 40,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to its surface, but only 8 minutes to travel the rest of the way to Earth.

If Betelgeuse exploded, transitioning from the red supergiant stage to supernova, it would light our sky continuously for two months. It could happen anytime — within a couple of thousand years, tomorrow or even now.

If the sun were to explode right now, you wouldn't know about it for another eight minutes and 20 seconds.

We are aware of only 14 black holes in space.

A day on Pluto lasts for 6 days and 9 hours. 🗯

Neptune takes 165 years to make one orbit of the moon. this means that since it’s discovery in 1846, it has only completed just one orbit!🗯

The earth is about 6,588,000,000,000,000,000 tons in weight.

The Space Station is the largest manned object ever sent into space.

The Moon is not round, but egg shaped.

Mercury is the only planet whose orbit is coplanar with its equator.

Any free-moving liquid in outer space will form itself into a sphere, because of its surface tension.

Stars don't appear to be moving, but they are actually traveling roughly 1,000 times faster than the fastest spacecraft that's ever flown.🗯
