Recently, the government has started the fourth phase of merger of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs),

under which 15 RRBs will be closed, reducing the total number of RRBs from 43 to 28.

Mergers in different states:-

Andhra Pradesh:- Here four RRBs will be merged. Uttar Pradesh:-Here three RRBs have been merged.

West Bengal

:- Here also three RRBs will be merged.

Other states

:- In Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan two RRBs will be merged. Objective of merger:-

Increase efficiency:-

The merger will improve the operational efficiency of RRBs and reduce costs.

Improvement in rural banking:-

This will enable small farmers and others in rural areas to get better financial services.

Target of "One State, One RRB":-

The government aims to have only one RRB in each state.

Merger Process:

This consolidation process started in 2004-05, and after three phases, the number of RRBs reduced from 196 to 43 by 2020-21.
