IELTS Speaking: two types of hesitation by Simon Corcoran If you look at the 'fluency and coherence' column of the band descriptors, you'll see the following: Band 7: may demonstrate language-related hesitation Band 8: hesitation is usually content-related ✅Do you understand the difference between these two types of hesitation? Here's how I would summarise them: ✔️Language-related hesitation: the candidate pauses because he/she is struggling with vocabulary or grammar. ✔️Content-related hesitation: the candidate pauses to think about his/her answer to the question. 🛑Tip: Try recording yourself as you answer some IELTS speaking questions. Writing and Reading Skill: Understanding Cohesion Cohesion is the way that ideas are linked in a text. Writers use certain techniques ( sometimes called "cohesive devices") to refer to ideas mentioned elsewhere in the passage. Some of these techniques include pronouns ( one [ s], another, the other), demonstratives ( this, that, these, those), and synonyms. Look at these examples from" The human Age." In 2002, when Crutzen wrote up the Anthropocene idea in the journal Nature, the concept was immediately picked up by researchers working in a wide range of disciplines. The writer uses a synonym, the concept, to refer to the idea in the first part of the sentence. Wilson calculates that human biomass is already a hundred times larger than that of any other large animal species that has ever walked the Earth. In this example, the writer uses that to refer to biomass. Note: The referent- the word or idea that is referred to- is not always close to the cohesive device. It may be in a different part of the sentence, or in a different sentence or section of the text. When using cohesive devices, remember to: • use pronouns that match the referent in gender and number. • make sure a pronoun clearly refers to a specific word or idea. Sometimes it's better to repeat words or use synonyms for clarity. • choose the correct synonym when using a dictionary or thesaurus. @SELF_STUDY_MATERIALS 🗝️
