TRAVEL VOCABULARY
First things first, let’s find out what is the difference between travel, trip, journey and tourism.
TRAVEL is usually used as a verb.
- We had been travelling all day and were exhausted.
We can also use TRAVEL as a noun, but only with a general meaning of moving from place to place.
- Foreign travel is very popular with students.
JOURNEY is a noun. It is used when you talk about going from one particular place to another. It may be long or short.
-The journey from New York to Los Angeles took several days.
- I have a short journey to work each day.
TRIP is used if you talk about the whole visit – the journey there and back, the place you stayed and so on.
- I’m going on a business trip next month. Did you have a good trip?
- We had a very successful trip although the journey back was terrible.
TOURISM is the industry of business providing accommodation, transport and other services.
- Tourism developed in Central America more slowly than in the nearby regions of the Caribbean and southern Mexico.
Most of the times we BOOK our train or plane tickets in advance. We pay for a seat, a couchette, or berth in advance.
BERTH – bed in a boat
COUCHETTE – bed on a train.
- For example, there are couchette coaches in Nightjet train which travels across Europe.
COMPARTMENT – a room on a train
FARE – money paid for a journey
I personally like to TRAVEL LIGHT – to travel with a very small amount of luggage
- I always travel light. I only take hand luggage.
LUGGAGE – baggage (suitcases, bags, etc)
A RESERVATION is when you have paid for something in advance. You can have a reservation for a hotel room, a flight, a train and so on.
💂♂️ Sorry, Sir. This hotel is full.
🤴 This is ridiculous. I have a reservation.
In a hotel, you may be offered a SINGLE ROOM (for one person)
or a DOUBLE ROOM (with a bed for two people).
- I’m on my own, so a single room will be fine.
- My husband is meeting me later so I’d like a double room, please.
If the room is EN-SUITE it means that there is a private bathroom and toilet that other guest cannot use.
- The rooms at the Palace Hotel are all en-suite so you can relax in your own bath.
When you arrive at the hotel you must CHECK IN and when you leave you CHECK OUT.
- On the day of your arrival at the hotel, please check in by 18.00.
- On the day of your departure, please check out by 10.00.
You also check in when you are getting a flight at an airport. After that, you may wait in the DEPARTURE LOUNGE, where only people who are getting on flights are allowed.
- Our flight was delayed so we had to wait in the departure lounge for a few hours.
A STOPOVER is when you are flying to one place but have a short break in your journey in another place.
The flight to Sydney isn’t direct, there is a stopover in Singapore.
A BACKPACK is a big bag that you carry on your back.
TO BACKPACK means to travel for quite a long time, and very cheaply.
- If we don’t have much money perhaps we could backpack around Europe for a couple of months.
What is the main reasons that holding back YOU from speaking English naturally?

Why developing SLP is important?
This opinions are just from my personal observations, so take them as a grain of salt, but I think, if your personality, your identity is changing in that language, how cool it is, right? Because it shows your dedication and the amount of work you put in. In a nutshell, you are developing SLP, it means that you have a good understanding of that culture. It's too crucial to push yourself to your limits, to go out there and this is going to sound great cliche, but actually experience the language firsthand. Then you are going to be able to speed the process at least some degree. Believe me, no school, no institution, no book can ever give you that. And if you are learning a language, you really have to understand why you want to learn it or it should trigger your deepest feelings.
For instance, for me I don't actually have an urgent reason to learn languages though, my pretty good reason is just because I want it. So, having the reason of "I just like it" is strong enough reason for me to learn anything. In fact that I'm intrinsically motivated all the time. But for others who are not really into languages they can easily lose their motivation when process gets hard. It's like, they drop it in the middle of the way. I'll give an example. We had German classes back at the University. To be honest, neither I enjoyed learning German, nor l had any goal for learning it. For me, it was kind of waste of time to tackle it without any purpose. Even though, I'm quite inclined to learn languages, l found it kind of boring. I could have mastered German, but I couldn't find any interest or value for me, as a result, l couldn't make myself learn it. Anyway, I'd forget it. Because as long as you don't use the language, you will lose it.
So, l think, having passion for something or understanding why you actually need it in a deep level, is the key to success. However, if you really want to reach fluency, although you don't have a passion, you have to be committed and you got to be willing what it takes. And it won't be with no sacrifices. It will take quite a lot time, discipline, and your effort.
Actually, fluency starts at that moment when you start to think in that language. And you feel very comfortable at this stage. But in order to reach that level you need to do massive input which I call it "brain soaking". You need to be exposed to that language so much and to be more strategical. Doing the massive input is too crucial in order to be able to reach to the level where you can think in your target language.Do massive input and gradually increase output and then balance them together, so that you can understand and speak as well.
So, as a conclusion, fluency is basically your ability to articulate your thoughts smoothly. That means you speak naturally without thinking too much. You can understand what is being said and you can make yourself understood.
Also keep in mind that your psycho physiological state matters a lot. If you are sad, angry, worried or upset, you are not going to learn. But if you are happy in an alpha brain state you are going to learn anything really quickly.
