Memhir Esuendale: #Feasts of #Ginbot_6 ✞✞✞On this day we commemorate Saint Macarius the Younger/the Second ✞✞✞ ✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞ ✞✞✞Saint Macarius the Second/the Younger✞✞✞ =>This Saint is also called “Makarios, Makars, Makari”. The name’s meaning does not change in all cases and that is because the root word in Greek has the meanings “blessed, esteemed and honored”. ✞And after his name comes the adjective “the Second/the Younger” and sometimes “the Alexandrian”. He is called “the Second/the Younger” so that he can be distinguished from “the Senior” or his predecessor (Macarius the Great), and Alexandria was the place where he was born and raised. ✞Abba Macarius was a 4th century righteous monastic that was full of virtues. While he lived in the world for 40 years, he delighted his Creator according to the law. During that time, when saints flourished like stars, because he had heard the accounts of Macarius the Great, he shunned this world, its materials, and entered the desert. ✞And when his Creator found him following the rules of the monastery correctly, being obedient to the elders, fasting, praying, modest, and occupied in prostrations, He honored him. At that time, the monks chose him to be the Abbot of the Great Monastery of Scetes. ✞And as he knew how to shepherd, he hastened greatly to keep his flock (the monks) from the wolves (devils). And as he was perfect, he used to pray for 40 days without interruption short of eating, drinking, or sitting down. And when he prayed, because it was from his heart in love of Christ, demons used to shudder before him. ✞And when he began to pray, demons around the monastery used to scream and flee. And those that were proud, when they saw his strict austerity and humility, used to be rebuked. And also in his day, he performed many miracles. ✞One day, while he was in his cell, a female hyena came to him, and pleaded him [as seen from its gesture]. And when he traveled with it to its den, he found all its cubs blind. Then he spat on the ground, and when he placed the mud on their eyes, all started to see. ✞And for his favor, the hyena brought for him the skin of a sheep. (Except mankind, animals do not forget favor) Hence, St. Macarius who used to sleep on the ground, started sleeping on the sheep skin beginning that day. ✞And because it did not rain for 2 years in his birthplace, Alexandria, the people sent him a message saying “Come to us”. And when he went and prayed, a thunderous rain fell. And because it fell for 2 successive days without ceasing, the people frightened said, “Our father, plead for us so that we will not perish because of our sins.” And he stopped the rain according to their will by his prayer (by the power of his Creator). ✞Though I cannot finish speaking about the life accounts of Abba Macarius, let me add only one thing that always amazes me when I think of it. ✞Many of us [today] do not partake of the Holy Body and Blood of our Lord. Why? . . . Because we want a place (an opportunity) to gratify ourselves with sin by disguising our act as if we honor and have fear the Holy Eucharist. And on the other side, some of us partake of the Holy Body and Blood of the Lord without care as if It was some ordinary thing. But both are errors. ✞Because we distanced ourselves in fear (this fear is not healthy), we will not escape from Judgment Day. “He who does not eat My flesh, and drink my blood, does not have eternal life.” (Adapted from John 6:53) ✞And for those of us who receive without humility, we should honor It, so that His Flesh will not consume us as fire and His Blood not drawn us as the sea. “Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.” (1 Chor. 11:27) ✞Thence, it is better for us all to repent and to receive in humility the Holy Eucharist.
