Read. Pray. Read it again. Let it soak in, comforting and strengthening you.

We do not need to be excessively frightened, anxious or worried about the unknown. We deal with what is presented before us. God leaves it up to us to choose how we’re going to react to both the expected and unexpected.

God has His own way of doing things, of course, but He’s so creative He does so much more than we ask! And He gives us the ability to endure. These very difficult matters makes us more resilient. It prepares us to stand against the storms of life. The widow’s story started with loss, grief, anxiety and adversity. It was rapidly escalating to oppression and subjugation. Her cry for God’s help (admitting she alone can’t do anything); her obedience (following the specific instructions to collect containers); and her faith (trusting the outcome would be to her benefit); brought about the miracle, revealing our wondrous God.

Back to Revelations, chapter 1 verse 3 to be precise. “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.” The above verse conveys to us to responsibly take God’s prophecy and thoughtfully prepare. We prepare spiritually by reading His word and deepening our connection to Him through prayer. We prepare emotionally by joining with other like-minded individuals. We prepare mentally by being proactive, finding solutions and standing up against wickedness. We prepare physically by putting aside supplies: both to sustain our families and to offer charity to others who are hurting.

The most obvious conclusion from the story of the widow is that it teaches us to not rely on ourselves, but to rely on God. We’re often not brought to this place of reliance unless it’s something too big for us to handle. There are other subtleties as well. It was her personal effort (collecting the jars) combined with her faith (trust + obedience) that brought about this miracle. What I’m telling you is that God’s miracles are available to us as well! When we’re at the end of our rope, when we’re faced with overwhelming odds, when we’re exhausted, beat down, frustrated, anxious and downright fearful, God will use this to get us to turn to Him. As we obey and trust, our faith increases. God works for our good; our faith increases more; we rely on Him more. It’s to our benefit and God counts our faith as righteous (Genesis 15:6).
