Когда гостья уже пришла, я понял, что до этого (раньше этого момента) слишком сильно "навел марафет" (zhuzhed up). В русском мы часто понимаем это по контексту или слову "уже", а англичане для этого требуют отдельное время.

Если ляпнуть здесь Past Simple, собеседник подумает, что гость заходит в дверь, а вы при нем начинаете судорожно взбивать подушки. Неловко выйдет! ___ 💼 2. Business: The Project Panic The Situation: You are explaining why a deadline was met easily.

Past Simple (The Result): "Honestly, the task didn't take nearly as much time as we expected." Здесь просто факт. Задача заняла (или, в данном случае, не заняла) время. Мы смотрим на итог. Кстати, фраза "not nearly as much" — уже разбирали, означает "даже близко не так много".

Past Perfect (The Reason): "It was easy because the previous team had spent weeks organizing the data for us." А тут мы объясняем почему нам так повезло. Предыдущая команда потратила время (had spent) до того, как мы вообще приступили к работе. Это предыстория. Если сказать просто "spent", будет звучать, будто они тратили время параллельно с вами, а нам важно подчеркнуть: когда мы пришли, база уже была готова.
