علوم اعصاب اجتماعی رشتهای است که از طریق مطالعه سازوکارهای نوروبیولوژیک میکوشد تا نحوه تاثیرگذاری حضور دیگران بر رفتار و فرایندهای ذهنی انسان را تبیین کند. این حیطه که نقطه اشتراک روانشناسی اجتماعی و علوم اعصاب است برای نخستین بار توسط جان كاسیوپو (John Cacioppo) و گری برنتسن (Gary Berntson) در سال ۱۹۹۲ با این عنوان نامگذاری شد. برای اشاره به این حیطه، گاهی از اصطلاح «مغز اجتماعی» استفاده میشود نام شبکهای از نواحی مغزی است که در بسیاری از فعالیتهای مرتبط با شناخت اجتماعی نقش دارند. قلمرو علوم اعصاب اجتماعی شامل مسائلی است که به ادراک انسان از عوامل گوناگون اجتماعی و رفتارهای حاصل از آن مربوط میشود. برای مثال این رشته توانسته است تا برخی از سازوکارهای مغزی دخیل در شکلگیری برداشت اجتماعی، اعتماد، همکاری، همدلی، نظریه ذهن، انزوا، اخلاق، پیشداوری و تفکرات قالبی را شناسایی کند.
