Bare infinitives
The term "bare infinitive" refers to the base form of a verb without the particle "to" that typically marks the infinitive. In English, the bare infinitive is used in various situations, including as the main verb in imperative sentences, after modal verbs, and after certain causative verbs like "make" and "let." When used with certain verbs, the word to is dropped from an infinitive.
Bare infinitives are always used with the modal verbs can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would. These verbs combine with infinitives to express the conditional mood, which conveys a sense of necessity or possibility.A bare infinitive is a verb form that is used without the word “to”. It is also known as a bare verb or a bare infinitive. For example, the verb “go” is a bare infinitive, whereas the verb “to go” is a to-infinitive. Bare infinitives are often used in conjunction with auxiliary verbs like "do," "have," and "be".Bare infinitives, also known as zero infinitives, are formed without to—you simply use the base form of a verb within a sentence. As you can imagine, this gets confusing, but thankfully bare infinitives are less common than full infinitives.
Here are 20 examples of bare infinitives:
1. Eat
2. Sing
3. Dance
4. Run
5. Sleep
6. Study
7. Write
8. Read
9. Play
10. Jump
11. Laugh
12. Swim
13. Think
14. Fly
15. Drive
16. Speak
17. Cry
18. Win
19. Make
20. Help
These examples demonstrate how the bare infinitive is used in various contexts, such as issuing commands, expressing abilities or actions, and functioning as complements to other verbs.
1. After modal verbs
When using an infinitive after modal verbs, you don’t need to include to. Common modal verbs include can, may, might, could, should, would, will, and must.
Iggy can do this all day.
We might be late tonight.
You must not mention politics when talking to my father.
2. After perception verbs
Perception verbs (see, hear, taste, feel, etc.) use bare infinitives when their object takes an action. In this case, the order is main verb → object → bare infinitive.
I heard the car arrive before I saw it.
They felt the ants crawl on their arm.
She watched the woman in the red dress walk across the dance floor.
These constructions are related to infinitive phrases, which we explain in detail in the final section.
2. With the verbs let, make, and do
Just like certain verbs always use the full infinitive, a few verbs always use the bare infinitive. These include the common verbs let, make, and do. Keep in mind the verbs let and make often use a direct object, which comes between them and the bare infinitive.
Let me work in peace!
He made him promise to behave.
I don’t drink coffee in the evening.
3. With the relative pronoun why
While the other relative pronouns use the full infinitive form, the word why uses the bare infinitive, especially when used to make suggestions in the form of a question.
Why wear a raincoat when it’s sunny outside?
Why not ask for directions?
Why bother?
Function ofbare infinitive: Understanding the bare infinitive is necessary for forming the tenses, and many other English grammar constructions. It will help you avoid incorrectly forming verbs that follow auxiliary verbs.
The formula of the bare infinitive is verb + verb
These examples showcase an array of activities, actions, and states that can be expressed using infinitives. Note that infinitives can function as verbs in sentences or be used as noun phrases, adjective phrases, or adverbial phrases.

Infinitive with to
An infinitive is a grammatical term used to describe the base form of a verb that is often preceded by the word "to." In English, the infinitive form is usually characterized by the "to" followed by the bare form of the verb (e.g., to run, to eat, to sleep).Infinitives with toare also known as full infinitives.Infinitive is also the base form of verbs preceded by the word to.An infinitive is a verb form that acts as other parts of speech in a sentence. It is formed with to + base form of theverb. An infinitive is a verbal, verb form or construction that plays the role of a different part of speech in a sentence. Although infinitives contain verbs, they cannot function as verbs. They do not convey a sense of tense on their own, and sentences containing them must include at least one finite main verb. Forming the Infinitive Infinitives are formed by placing to in front of the base form of a verb. They are negated by placing them not in front of them.
Functions: The infinitive has many functions. It can be helpful to identify what role an infinitive plays in a sentence: with the proper understanding of how an infinitive is used, writers can structure their sentences with clarity and precision.

Gerund, Infinitive with to and Bare infinitive
Gerund
A gerund is a verb form that functions as a noun in a sentence. It is formed by adding the suffix "-ing" to the base form of a verb. Gerunds can be used as subjects, objects, or complements in a sentence. A gerund is a verb in its ing (present participle) form that functions as a noun that names an activity rather than a person or thing. Any action verb can be made into a gerund.
In English grammar, a gerund is simply a verb form ending in -ing and functions as a noun. Walking, holding, and listening may seem like present participles, but they can also be gerunds that function as nouns.
Function of gerund
Gerunds are a flexible, useful type of word because they enable us to speak and write about actions in a more abstract way, positioning those actions as reasons for specific outcomes, hobbies, and receivers of subjects’ actions. gerund is also a verb that acts as a noun.
Formula of Gerund = verb + verb + -ing
Gerund Examples
1. Gerunds can appear at the beginning of a sentence when used as a subject:
Jogging is a hobby of mine.
2. Gerunds can act as an object following the verb:
Daniel quit smoking a year ago.
3. Gerunds can serve as an object after a preposition:
I look forward to helping you paint the house.
Note: The same spelling rules that apply to the progressive tenses also apply to gerunds.
4. Some verbs and verb phrases are directly followed by a gerund:
Paul avoids using chemicals on the vegetables he grows.
5. Some verbs can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive without causing a change in meaning:
6. Some people prefer getting up early in the morning.
7. Some people prefer to get up early in the morning
8. Some verbs can be followed by a gerund or infinitive but with a change in meaning:
He remembered sending the fax. (He remembered the act of sending the fax)
He remembered to send the fax. (He remembered the fax and sent it.)
