#BeOpenDESIGN Norwegian design students Hannah Gilboe Kirkestuen and Juni Ruud Bunkholdt developed Modus, a modular tabletop system for offices that can be assembled in various ways to adapt to different environments. Inspired by building blocks, the customizable tabletop has a playful look combining different textures, shapes and materials. Smooth surfaces are intended for writing or typing on a laptop, while grooves are intended to make the product more visually appealing while guiding cables. Other elements include plug sockets hidden by a wooden disc and a cushioned edge that provides wrist support. via aho.design

#BeOpenARCH British designer Thomas Heatherwick's studio is collaborating with London-based architecture office Veretec to create a 19-hectare campus for global pharmaceutical company UCB in the UK with a three-storey timber structure in the centre. The published renders show a building with Studio Heatherwick's signature curved and organic forms, which features a large atrium and events space that is overlooked by scalloped balconies on the two upper floors. The renovation will require to demolish an eastern wing and its courtyard of the existing campus, which includes a block designed by RMJM and a 19th-century manor house previously revamped by Arup.

#BeOpenDESIGN London-based designers Edo Kim and Yeseul Kim have conceptualized a toothbrush with replaceable heads, which means you don’t have to replace the whole toothbrush when bristles fray. Named Clip, the item takes on the traditional shape of manual toothbrushes and is made from highly durable, long-lasting recycled polypropylene to give less impact on environment, compared to traditional materials such as plastic and nylon. Subsequently, it requires less processing and results in less pollutions and waste of energy.

#BeOpenDESIGN Copenhagen-based Maritime Architecture Studio has installed Dyppezone, an open-air bath that can be easily moved around the harbor in the Port of Copenhagen. The small mobile unit consisting of eight floating modules assembled around a pool in the middle is free for use to all citizens who want a comfortable and safe way to swim in the harbor. The pool is equipped with an adjustable bottom, which can be lifted up and down according to season and needs. In this way, the bath can be used both as a children's pool in the summer and as a cold water basin in the winter.

#BeOpenDESIGN Amsterdam-based design studio H-O-TT has proposed Furfit, a conceptual hybrid collection that aims to find an active use for the pieces of furniture that are otherwise limiting our movements. The designers have developed a simple screw system that would allow parts to be added or substracted thus changing the objects’ function. To turn the Idas side table into a kettle bell, the user needs to take its top off, while Heracles is a coffee table that features five pairs of dumbbells for legs. A set of lighter dumbbells ranging from 0.5 to two kilograms acts as pegs in the Epimedes coat rack. One simply has to turn the Lasius high stool on its side and its decorative sinuous handle will double as a curl barbell. In a similar manner, push-up bars are rendered as stools with hemispherical seats that allow them to be laid flat on the ground. #BeOpenARCH Secret Sky by Alibi Studio is the latest in a series of ongoing renovation projects in rural Michigan by a local non-profit organisation, which aims to celebrate the old wooden barns. Trying to retain as much of the original iconic barn as possible, the architect has removed a segment of the dilapidated gamble-roofed building to create an angular passageway from which visitors can admire the sky. A series of solar lights are activated at twilight, illuminating the structure from the inside and creating what the studio founder Cathlyn Newell describes as a "large-scale lantern" in the landscape casting long shadows on the ground that surrounds it.

#BeOpenDESIGN Aiming to demonstrate how design can be used to form a more responsible relationship with nature, Mexican designer Gerardo Osio has woven the living branches of a weeping willow tree together to form a swing-like seat along the Dommel river in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The designer has chosen willow as the main material for his project because it is a species native to the Netherlands and plays a key role in the region’s ecosystem. Assisted by local basket weaver Mieke Langenhuizen, Osio formed the seat using the living branches of a white weeping willow tree growing along the Dommel river and harvested Belgium red willow twigs, which are commonly used in basket-making. The designer expects that this solution will result in the tree producing more tissues to make the swing stronger, because of the stress of the weight experienced by the tree and because of the fact that the living branches woven into the seat will keep growing. #BeOpenARCH Beijing-based AOE Architects have completed the Sino-Italian pavilion for the Italian Cultural Exchange reception center in Chengdu, China. The design aims to find an intersection of Chinese and Western cultural differences to illustrate the cultural mix culture while blending harmoniously with the lush natural surroundings. The overall concept of the site is inspired by the "ruyi", used by China to gift foreign envoys since ancient times as a symbol of friendly relations and peace between the two countries. The new pavilion fully embodies the eastern wisdom of Taoism, nature, and the unity of man and nature, accentuating the close relationship between architecture and ‘scenery’.
