#BeOpenARCH Architects Robert Arlt and Charles MacBride have worked with a group of students in the South Dakota State University Department of Architecture to develop a striking gabled Passivhaus near the school campus. According to the team, the experimental 2,000 square-foot house is the first in the area to produce more energy than it consumes, so it can even feed the energy back to the grid. This is made possible through numerous energy-saving and environmentally friendly features including photovoltaic panels installed on the roof to generate energy, a built-in water heater with a more efficient heat pump and quadruple glazed windows. #BeOpenDESIGN German outdoor brand VAUDE has prototyped the world’s first recyclable backpack made from a mono-material with a 3D printed suspension system. Named Novum 3D, the innovation opens a look into the future of sustainable outdoor gear and provides insights for circular design. All bag parts, including the back pads, the packsack, and the straps, are 3D printed from a 100% thermoplastic material (TPU), and are easily removable and fully recyclable. Comfort is ensured, thanks to 3D printing technology that allows for the creation of an extremely lightweight suspension system. One of the most stable forms in nature, the honeycomb construction offers maximum stability with minimum use of materials. The lightweight, open structure also automatically provides ideal ventilation, while different degrees of hardness ensure ideal pressure distribution.

#BeOpenARCH Architecture firm BIG has constructed a mass-timber Passivhaus factory in a Norwegian forest for outdoor furniture maker Vestre, which combines energy-efficient Passivhaus strategies with a robot-assisted production line, which helps reduce its energy consumption by 90 per cent compared to a conventional factory. Made mostly from wood, the cross-shaped building consists of four double-height wings topped by a green roof, each housing a different stage of production process.

#BeOpenARCH Danish firm Kvorning Design has unveiled a new iconic seamark in Norway’s Hardangerfjord. Named Salmon Eye, the spectacular 650 sqm floating architecture and art installation houses an aquaculture visitor and information center designed to communicate the impact of aquaculture and its production techniques. True to its name, the design curves for its ellipsoid design, bathed in 9,500 stainless steel shaped like scales to imitate shiny, silvery skin of salmon.

#BeOpenDESIGN China-born University of Cincinnati graduate Sangyu Xi has won this year’s James Dyson Award with her off-the-shelf adjustable scoliosis brace designed for teenage girls. Named Airy, the brace has been conceived to provide teenage wearers with a brace to support their scoliosis – a condition that causes spinal curvature and often develops during puberty. The attractive design, translucent bioplastic and subtle colour pallet would specifically appeal to teenage girls. Besides, the brace grows with its wearer.

#BeOpenARCH Commissioned to design the new headquarters of SINOVAC, a leading Chinese biopharmaceutical company focused on vaccine research and production, Beijing-based practice Aedas has proposed a design inspired by the ‘tree of life’ archetype. While R&D and office towers in the south represent roots, a manufacturing tower in the north evokes the ‘crown.’ Spreading outward like leaves are a series of towers connected via a corporate gallery and public space along the ‘stem.’

#BeOpenDESIGN Rootfull by London-based multidisciplinary creative Zena Holloway is a pioneering initiative that explores the binding properties of grass root. To produce memorable artefacts, across fashion, art and design – from coral-like sculptures to intricate wearables, the designer cultivates wheatgrass seed in templates carved from beeswax. Roots form a naturally woven structure, which expands to follow the form of the templates it grows into. Depending on the template, the roots structures can grow flat and compact or create intricate 3D shapes.

#BeOpenARCH Tasked to reconfigure and extend part of a former cable factory in Helsinki, local architecture studios JKMM and ILO architects have created Dance House within the Finnish capital’s largest cultural centre. Enclosed by a large steel-clad cube, the structure houses two black-box dance studios, one of which is the largest dance performance space in the Nordic countries. Organised across the building's five levels, an underground club, cloakroom facilities, restaurant, rehearsal and back-of-house spaces have all been designed with performance in mind. It is possible for dance to take over the entire building for the duration of a performance.

#BeOpenDESIGN US-based startup SunnySide has developed an innovative solar-powered lunchbox with a self-heating and cooling feature that brings the contents to the right temperature just before the meal. To keep hot stuff hot, a heating coil is placed around the metal container to evenly conduct thermal energy around its contents. Simultaneously, a pair of fans located on the bottom of the lunchbox pull out warm air, ensuring the food doesn’t spoil in the heat. The device relies almost entirely on a solar panel built right into its lid to charges its internal 10,000mAh battery. This is more than enough to power the container’s heating and cooling features, and a tiny LCD screen and buttons on the side, and even doubles up as a wireless power bank to charge a smartphone, AirPods, or even a laptop. #BeOpenARCH Local studio Fuse Architects has renovated a 1960s three-bedroom vacation home on the sandy beaches of California’s Pajaro Dunes. Although the shape and form of the remodeled home remains relatively unchanged from its original design, the team took advantage of the ocean’s proximity by opening up the walls to frame views of the coastline and brightened the dark interiors by significantly raising its roofline at various points. The dark cedar exterior has been chosen to ground the home within the surrounding dunes, while a contrasting natural cedar accentuates the point of entry.
