Ethiopia Cuts Turkey Cargo Transit Time From 40 Days to Nine Days
Ethiopia’s maritime and logistics operator has reduced cargo transit time from Turkish ports to Ethiopia from more than 40 days to nine days, as the country seeks to improve supply chain efficiency and lower logistics costs for businesses.
The new service, introduced by Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL), enables faster and direct movement of import cargo from Turkey to Ethiopia’s inland destinations, the company said.
Over the past three months, 150 full container load (FCL) shipments have been transported through the arrangement in two rounds, supporting industries that depend on imported raw materials and equipment.
The development comes days after ESL reported that it saved more than 500 million birr in operating costs over the past 10 months through cost reduction measures and tighter expense controls.

Trump claims Strait of Hormuz will reopen as US-Iran deal reached, shippers and insurers remain cautious
On June 15, US president Donald Trump announced that a deal had been reached between the US and Iran which would see the end of military operations, the removal of the US naval blockade in Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, questions still remain about the future of shipping through the strait – including safety concerns and uncertainty around Iranian tolls on vessels.

ESL resumes fuel imports after 40 years
In a significant operational recovery, state-owned Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) has resumed handling the country’s petroleum imports, including from new international suppliers. This marks a historic first, as Ethiopia has now sourced fuel from within Africa.
The Ethiopian government has diversified its procurement strategy to include West Asian markets and ports in western India. This shift comes amid disruptions to traditional oil supply routes and rising domestic demand, particularly for jet fuel. The demand for jet fuel is largely driven by Bole International Airport’s role as a major African aviation hub and the extensive operations of Ethiopian Airlines…
A recent breakthrough saw Ethiopia import jet fuel from a terminal in Nigeria, operated by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery at Dangote Quays, Lekki, owned by billionaire Aliko Dangote.

These are often the unsung heroes behind oversized cargo, industrial equipment, and complex project logistics.
For shippers, the right port equipment can make a significant
difference:
Faster vessel turnaround
V Reduced cargo handling risks
V Better efficiency for OOG and heavy-lift shipments V More reliable supply chains
As freight forwarders, we often focus on vessels, transit times, and freight rates. But the reality is that efficient cargo handling on the ground is just as critical as transportation itself.
When you're shipping oversized machinery, project cargo, batteries, vehicles, or time-sensitive freight, the capabilities of the destination and loading port matter more than many realize.

Behind every container, project cargo shipment, and vessel operation is a network of specialized cranes working together to keep ports running efficiently.
Not all cranes do the same job.
At modern ports, different equipment is designed for different cargo challenges:
**Alongside the vessel **
1. Ship-to-Shore (STS) Cranes - the giants that load and discharge containers from ocean vessels
2. Mobile Harbor Cranes (MHC) - flexible solutions for containers, bulk cargo, and heavy-lift operations
3. Portal Cranes - commonly used for general cargo and port handling
Inside the container yard
A. RTG (Rubber-Tyred Gantry) Cranes
B. RMG (Rail-Mounted Gantry) Cranes
C. Reach Stackers
D. Straddle Carriers
These machines keep containers moving efficiently between storage areas, trucks, and rail connections.
For heavy industry & project cargo
Goliath Cranes
Floating Cranes
Tower Cranes
Jib Cranes
Ethiopia Tightens Logistics Entry Rules With Higher Capital, Infrastructure Bar
Ethiopia has raised the barriers to entry for multimodal logistics operators, increasing capital requirements, infrastructure obligations and governance standards in a regulatory overhaul that deepens the state’s push to formalise a sector central to trade and import flows.
The changes, contained in Directive 1140/2026 issued by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and signed by the Minister Alemu Sime, revise Directive 802/2021, which first opened the door to private multimodal operators under a structured licensing regime.

Ethiopia Launches New Franco Valuta Rules and FEMOUS Digital System
ADDIS ABABA — In a major regulatory overhaul designed to tighten oversight of foreign currency usage and curb parallel market risks, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has officially enacted a comprehensive new directive governing Franco Valuta imports.
Titled “Import on Franco Valuta Directive No. FVD/01/2026,” the regulation introduces rigid digital monitoring mechanisms and defines explicit limits on non-banking foreign currency imports. Signed by NBE Governor Dr. Eyob Tekalign, the directive went into immediate effect on May 29, 2026.
Curbing Risks while Maintaining Trade Channels
Franco Valuta arrangements allow importers to fund goods using alternative offshore foreign currency sources without depleting the domestic banking system’s reserves…

Ethiopia Fully Opens Freight Forwarding and Logistics Sector to Foreign Investors
Ethiopia Today (Addis Ababa), May 25, 2026: In a major economic shift, the Ethiopian Investment Board has officially decided to fully open the nation’s freight forwarding and logistics sector to international investors.
This landmark decision removes previous restrictions that locked foreign players out of independent core logistics operations.
Previously regulated under Investment Regulation No. 474/2020, international firms were strictly limited to joint ventures with domestic operators, with foreign shareholding capped at 49%. Because this ownership ceiling restricted global investment inflows, the government opted for full liberalization to modernize the industry.
Reasons:
1.Modernizing the Logistics Landscape
2.Local Industry Pushback and WTO Alignment
