The Lives of the Gosha Muhammadan Women in Triplicane: Circa 1914   This episode provides a vivid and intimate details of the lives of Muslim women in Triplicane in 1914. It is a rather depressing and morose picture of the total absence of freedom and even the small of joys that these women are denied.   Here is an excerpt from Lady Lawley.   The daily round—the preparation of food, the treatment of ailments, the observation of omens, and the lengthy toilet—fills the day. She does not ask for anything different. Born and brought up to it, she has no wish to alter her circumstances.   The cry is raised outside the harem for emancipation, for a lifting of the curtain; but it finds little echo in the heart of the gosha woman. The Life of Muslim Women in Triplicane in 1914: Extracts from a European’s Diary   Did you know that Triplicane, the cultural hub of Chennai, was once majorly dominated by Muslims?   Do read this eye-opening account written by Lady Lawley, the wife of Arthur Lawley, the then Governor of Madras. She published it in 1914. It is an eyewitness record of the Madras she saw with her own eyes. Her narrative of the plight of Muslim women of that period is fascinating to say the least.   Here is an excerpt.   TRIPLICANE IS THE MUHAMMADAN QUARTER OF MADRAS. The best houses are occupied by Muhammadan merchants.
