“We Are Not Martyrs”—A Message from Serge, Who Survived Attempted Murder at the Hands of French Police https://crimethinc.com/Serge A translation of the first message from Serge since French police grievously injured him along with many other people during a protest in Sainte-Soline on March 25, 2023. Serge spent a month in a coma after a police officer shot him in the head with a grenade. We are tremendously relieved that he has recovered enough to release this message. Yesterday, French police arrested 18 people accused of association with Soulevements de la Terre (“Earth Uprisings”), one of the movements that participated in the protests in Sainte-Soline. Today is the date that French interior minister Gérald Darmanin set for the state-ordered dissolution of the Soulevements de la Terre. As usual, the state endangers the lives of those it supposedly protects, blames the victims of its attacks, and then takes steps to silence the survivors.

This week marks 10 years since the June 2013 uprisings in Brazil. What started as small protests in a few cities against rising transit fares spread into a nationwide popular revolt against the cost of living under capitalism. The uprising of 2013 was initiated by autonomous and anti-capitalist movements. A decade later, however, leftist parties—including the ruling PT, the Workers Party—along with corporate media and pundits are trying to frame that uprising as the supposed origin of the extreme right that came to power in 2018 with Jair Bolsonaro. This is a new phenomenon: for the first time, the traditional left is not trying to co-opt the uprising, but rather to associate street protest and autonomous mobilization with fascism in a dishonest attempt to blame the oppressed for the reaction of the oppressors.

Wherever we are situated in this society, our future boils down to two options: accept our fate and try to reduce the harm to our bodies and the environment on a piecemeal basis—or actively resist in order to interrupt the disaster and implement our own solutions. If we resign ourselves to the future implied by catastrophic climate change, widespread pollution, and ecological collapse, sooner or later, the disaster will come for us. If we do not accept the destruction of our lives, our land, our food, and everything that connects us with each other and the biosphere as a whole, we have to fight to regain control over the conditions of our lives and the decisions that determine our survival. Due to forest fires driven by climate change, the air itself throughout large swaths of northeastern North America has become dangerous to breathe. The end of the world is not ahead of us—it’s already here. It is the inevitable consequence of our disconnection from the environment and the natural processes that support our lives. When we talk about climate change and the un-natural disasters it is inflicting on us, remember: for decades, anarchists and other radicals did everything we could to forestall this catastrophe and the authorities did everything they could to force it on us. Our only hope is to return to a more rooted way of inhabiting the world, in which we identify with the other living things around us and take responsibility for the ways we impact them. Hundreds of people spoke out against Cop City. Despite reports that people were paid to speak in favor of it, only something like four people did. Atlanta City Council has shown clearly that they function as a front group to channel money to police in outright defiance of the public.

At 5:30 am, following almost 15 hours of public comment overwhelmingly against Cop City, the Atlanta City Council has voted to go forward with the police militarization process. The crowd in City Hall is shouting "Cop City will never be built!" The fight is not over.
