On March 14, 2018, Black feminist activist and City Council member Marielle Franco was murdered in downtown Rio de Janeiro. It took until March 24, 2024 for arrests to take place in connection with her murder—perhaps because the accused include the man who was chief of police at that time and a politician and his brother, who are linked to illegal capitalist ventures. A few days ago, 23 activists were acquitted by the courts in the same city after an ordeal stretching back to 2013. Both cases show the interconnections between the state, the courts, the police, both legal and illegal capitalist enterprises, and paramilitary forces. https://crimethinc.com/Brazil2018

In Russia, the four people who are accused of carrying out the massacre at Crocus City Hall in Moscow were displayed in court with gruesome injuries from torture. Videos showing them being tortured during interrogation appeared on Russian social media. While the massacre was horrific, we also have to point out that this marks a threshold in the Russian government's systematic normalization of torture to extract confessions. For years now, they have used torture to force anarchists and anti-fascists to sign false confessions. After ten years of judicial persecution following the June 2013 and 2014 uprisings in Rio de Janeiro, 22 comrades are finally free. The court process itself was the punishment, destroying everyone's mental health and contributing to one of the defendants taking his own life. While the crack and heroin epidemics of the late twentieth century were used as a pretext to introduce mass incarceration, mandatory minimums, three-strikes laws, and racial profiling, all of which disproportionately targeted Black and brown people, so many white people have died of overdoses over the past decade that the rhetoric around the opioid epidemic has changed dramatically. Today, even racist conservatives acknowledge the opioid epidemic as a social crisis—but how to address it remains an open question. Anarchists struggle against the conditions that give rise to drug addiction, the ways that the authorities take advantage of addiction to inflict additional damage on communities, and also against addiction itself.
