Tomorrow, 26 May, in the lecture series Ancient Central Asia and Beyond of the HCARNetwork, our colleagues from East and West Sören Stark, Djamal Mirzaakhmedov, Sirodj Mirzaakhmedov, Asan Torgoev will give a lecture on their joint research in Bukhara: Bukhara between Antiquity and the Middle Ages: Results of the 2020 season of excavations in the 'shahristan' of Bukhara We hope to see you all on Zoom tomorrow. Вчера из жизни ушла Валентина Ивановна Козенкова – выдающийся ученый, крупнейший специалист по археологии Кавказа эпохи раннего железного века, ведущий научный сотрудник отдела скифо-сарматской археологии Института археологии РАН. Валентина Ивановна родилась 17 ноября 1931 года в Калужской области. В 1955 году закончила исторический факультет МГУ им. М.В. Ломоносова, первые годы после его окончания занималась археологией Средней Азии. С 1960 года до последнего дня своей жизни работала в Институте археологии РАН. В 1969 году она защитила кандидатскую диссертацию, в 1990 году –диссертацию на соискание степени доктора исторических наук. Валентина Ивановна была вдумчивым, неутомимым исследователем древностей Кавказа. Она искренне любила этот край, его историю, его народы. За ее плечами десятки экспедиций, сотни километров пройденных в разведках дорог. Ее труды – бесценный вклад в изучение археологии Кавказа. Многолетние раскопки таких важнейших памятников, как поселение Сержень-Юрт, могильник Сержень-Юрт, могильник Терезе вошли в золотой фонд археологии. Ее монументальные Своды по кобанской культуре стали настольными книгами для нескольких поколений кавказоведов. Вечная память выдающемуся ученому, Учителю, доброму и очень душевному человеку – Валентине Ивановне Козенковой.

By the 3rd millennium BC, southern Mesopotamia was characterised by a network of competing and collaborating Early Dynastic city-states. This lecture will present results from the 2019 excavation of the Lagash Archaeological Project. Lagash (modern Tell al-Hiba) is one of southern Mesopotamia’s and Iraq’s largest ancient cities, expanding to c 600 hectares in the mid-3rd millennium BC. Our research at Lagash is focussed on questions about ancient urbanism, demography, and sustainability. How did the city grow, what resources and economic activities supported its population, and how densely did its inhabitants live? How did institutional and economic polycentrism contribute to the urban landscape and the city’s resilience?
