China Sold a Record Amount of U.S. Treasury Bonds in Q1 2024 China offloaded USD 49 billion worth of U.S. Treasury bonds in the first quarter of 2024, an amount equivalent to the GDP of Mongolia. In December, China held USD 816.3 billion in U.S. debt; by March, this figure had dropped to USD 767.4 billion and continues to decline. While the U.S. makes bold statements, China acts quietly and without much noise. Since 2022, China has already sold off a third of its U.S. Treasury holdings.

Flood affects the movement of first fertilizer consignment of Ethiopia The interest by Ethiopia and Uganda in importing goods through Lamu could be the lifeline that the largely moribund port needs even as it continues to register growth in business. Last week Ethiopia received the first shipment of 60,000 tonnes of fertiliser imported through the Port of Lamu from Morocco. And this week Uganda signalled an interest in using the Lamu port in a move that would see it expand trade with Somalia. The interest by Ethiopia and Uganda in importing goods through Lamu could be the lifeline that the largely moribund port needs even as it continues to register growth in business. Kenya’s Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen toured the port on Wednesday and said it is strategically positioned to be the port of call for goods destined for Northern Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. “That’s why we will do all in our power to facilitate the shipment of goods, including the 60,000-tonne fertiliser cargo destined for Ethiopia, in spite of a damaged section of the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road due to floods.” This is the first time Ethiopia is importing cargo through Lamu Port since its operationalisation three years ago. In 2022, the port handled 6,539 metric tonnes of cargo, a figure that jumped to 37,576 metric tonnes in 2023. Container traffic has also seen a rise, with twenty-foot equivalent units increasing from 382 in 2022 to 1,779 in 2023. Ethiopian cargo is handled through Mombasa, which is expensive. Despite its higher operational costs compared to Djibouti, Mombasa in the past two years benefited from Ethiopian freight cargo volumes increasing from 6,915 metric tonnes in 2022 to 14,383 metric tonnes last year due to its relative stability and efficiency. But even as Kenya celebrated the newfound business, the extent of challenges on the route were exposed while receiving the first transit consignment to Ethiopia after trucks carrying fertiliser were stuck for several days en route upcountry due to the flooded section in Gamba, Tana River County, on the Lamu-Garsen highway. Akobo says production start-up date in Ethiopia uncertain Scandinavian gold exploration and mining company Akobo Minerals has informed shareholders of the progress it is making in solving recent challenges with nationwide fuel supply disruptions and new customs procedures, finally enabling full site activity at its Segele mine, in Ethiopia. Production startup is, however, still uncertain, but has been delayed to July or August. The unforeseen nationwide diesel shortages and customs changes for duty-free imports significantly impacted on the company’s operations in recent months. Contingency plans were made, but the rapidly evolving situation proved more challenging than anticipated. With government support, these issues have been resolved for now, the company explains. The commissioning of the main plant has begun in some areas, with plans being made for Universal Power’s arrival to commission generators. The remaining electrical cables are ready for connection, with progress being made on finalising diesel infrastructure and tailings storage facility membrane. Efforts continue to finalise the processing plant and access the orebody. The arrival of critical mining equipment after a prolonged customs delay will enable full ramp-up of mining activities at site. The company has actively reduced site activity to minimise cash burn rate in the delay period. As production increases and positive cash flow is achieved, Akobo says it will refocus on exploration to maximise project value. The company also informs about strategic initiatives started to evaluate ways of increasing efficiency in production and further reducing operational risk, in addition to strengthening local management capacity. Debt obligations, with respect to the gold bond financing, have been restructured with Monetary Metals. All former convertible debt has been converted to equity, resulting in only long-term debt to Monetary Metals remaining. Funding has been secured and strategic discussions and evaluations are underway with key industry players to mitigate risks and improve production efficiency to capture the significant short-term potential seen in the updated mine plan. Seasoned local management consultant Wondwossen Zeleke, with experience in the Ethiopian mining and oil industry, has joined the team. A fuel supply agreement has been signed with the Ethiopian National Oil Company for direct sourcing and improved reliability; Akobo is awaiting the final licence from the Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority. Collaboration with Leeder Industrial and Airland Logistics is said to build supply chain resilience. Organisational changes have allowed for an increased focus on finding local suppliers that can meet price and performance requirements, the company avers. The updated mine plan shows significant enhancements, it highlights. Favourable gold price trends have significantly increased the value of the Segele resource compared to previous financial estimates. Mining Weekly
