Stephen Ogilvie is a man in his 40s, originally from Scotland, who had been living for several years in north Belfast, in the same building as his attacker. Neighbours describe him as a vulnerable person who lived alone but had people around him, and say he was deaf in one ear.
"He'd always have people around," one resident said. "He's the kind of person who would have helped anyone in a bad situation."
He remains in hospital in critical condition with serious injuries to his eyes, face, neck and back. Friends have rallied publicly on social media, with one post reading: "Our shaggie — you can make it ma man, whole world supporting you."

He’s from Khartoum, Sudan, which means he had lived in a city controlled by Islamists aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood before coming to the UK.
He probably grew up witnessing many beheadings, which led him to try it himself against a British man in Belfast.
