QABD — PLACING THE HANDS UPON THE CHEST DURING PRAYER In much of West Africa, Islam was historically practised predominantly according to the Mālikī madhhab, where sadl—leaving the hands by one's sides during the standing position of prayer was widely practised. When Shaykh al-Islam al-Hajj Ibrahim Niass (RA) visited Kano, he encountered a community in which sadl was overwhelmingly prevalent. He therefore encouraged the people to practise qabḍ, placing the right hand over the left during prayer, based on the Prophetic Sunnah. The Shaykh had already addressed this matter in his treatise: Rafʿ al-Malām ʿamman Rafaʿ wa Qabaḍa Iqtidāʾan bi Sayyid al-Anām In this work, he discussed the jurisprudential basis for qabḍ and its connection to the practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. At the time, however, this position met considerable opposition. Some of his opponents regarded qabḍ as an innovation introduced by Shaykh Ibrahim and his followers. His disciples consequently became known in certain circles as Yan Qabdu. The opposition reportedly became so severe that those found praying with their hands folded were arrested and subjected to torture at the order of the then Grand Mufti of Nigeria. Even some of Shaykh Ibrahim's students found it difficult to believe that such an order had actually been given. The Shaykh therefore went as far as having a photograph taken of himself performing qabḍ, providing his students with tangible evidence of his position. Today, the practice that was once fiercely resisted has become widespread in the region even among some who once opposed it. This is only one example of the Sunnah Shaykh Ibrahim Niass (RA) sought to revive and establish. To be continued…

KARĀMĀT OF THE AWLIYĀ' | NO. 11 Shehu ʿUthmān dan Fodio رحمه الله A Qādirī Master of West Africa Ṭarīqah: Qādiriyyah Region: Hausaland — present-day Nigeria 🇳🇬 Born: 1168 AH / 1754 CE Died: 1232 AH / 1817 CE Shehu ʿUthmān dan Fodio رحمه الله occupies a central place in the intellectual and spiritual history of West African Islam. He was a scholar, teacher and Sufi associated with the Qādiriyyah tradition, and his writings and teachings influenced generations of Muslims across the region. His Karāmāt West African biographical literature preserves accounts of extraordinary spiritual visions, unveilings (kashf) and divine signs associated with the Shehu. These accounts were preserved particularly within the scholarly tradition surrounding his family and disciples. Among the important works associated with this tradition are Rawḍ al-Jinān and al-Kashf wa'l-Bayān, attributed to Gidado ibn Laima, a close associate of the Shehu's son, Muḥammad Bello. In the Sufi understanding, such experiences are described as karāmāt when they occur through Allah's favor to a righteous servant. They do not mean that a walī possesses independent knowledge or power. Allah remains the sole possessor of the unseen and the source of every extraordinary occurrence. "Unquestionably, the friends of Allah - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve." Qur'an 10:62 A Lesson from His Life The story of the Awliyā' should not be reduced to miraculous accounts alone. In the case of Shehu ʿUthmān dan Fodio, his enduring legacy is equally found in his scholarship, teaching, spiritual discipline, writings and service to the Muslim community. His life demonstrates how the African Islamic scholarly tradition produced figures whose intellectual and spiritual influence extended far beyond their own generation.
