Anthony Elanga announces he has officially left Manchester United

Erik ten Hag had always ideally wanted a goalkeeper suited to his style, which he recognized De Gea would never be. However, due to United's low summer budget, restricted to ~£100m from FFP, he initially planned to invest purely in a new striker and midfielder. De Gea's poor performances in the FA Cup Final and against Sevilla lead to Onana's signing and the withdrawal of what initially appeared to be an agreed renewal

Ten Hag personally contacted the people around Onana to enquire about his availability in the days before the Champions League Final. United withdrew the proposal that De Gea had agreed to, with Ten Hag demanding through the club that De Gea had to accept a role as a No 2 or leave. [@LaurieWhitwell]

Ten Hag accepted he could do “one last dance” with De Gea, as an insider put it, before the FA Cup Final against City. It was only after two mistakes against Gundogan in the final, as well as the 3-0 loss to Sevilla and 1-0 to West Ham, that Ten Hag decided he could no longer wait for a new goalkeeper. [@LaurieWhitwell]

Jadon Sancho's trial at false nine during pre-season is a genuine attempt by Ten Hag to see if he could perform the role on a regular basis this season. Ten Hag has been encouraged by what he has seen [@lauriewhitwell]
