The Balochistan government has announced a comprehensive plan to strengthen security on highways, including the establishment of a dedicated highway security force and the introduction of an interim convoy system for transport vehicles. Key details:
· A new security force for highways will be established at an estimated cost of PKR 25 billion and is expected to become operational within six months. · Until the force is fully operational, freight vehicles will be moved in organized convoys to ensure the safe transport of goods and passengers across major routes, including the corridor from the Taftan border to Quetta and other parts of the country. · An insurance mechanism for cargo vehicles will be introduced, and compensation for vehicles burned in recent highway incidents is being expedited. · The announcement was made during a meeting with representatives of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI), where transporters and business leaders raised concerns over ongoing attacks on cargo trucks, LPG tankers, highway robberies, and damage to infrastructure. · Security assistance from the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps (FC), and Anti-Terrorism Force (ATF) is being utilized to secure sensitive highway routes.
