Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina posted on X that transgender children do not exist, writing that only “mentally ill parents, doctors or teachers” are pushing what she called a “sick s*xual ideology” onto minors. The post continues a pattern for the South Carolina Republican, who is running for governor. In July 2023 Mace had described herself as pro-transgender rights and said she supported minors exploring pronouns, hairstyles or clothing, telling an interviewer, “Be who you want to be, but don’t make permanent changes as a child.” Her tone shifted sharply after Donald Trump’s 2024 election win. She introduced a resolution barring transgender women, including then incoming Representative Sarah McBride of Delaware, from using Capitol Hill bathrooms matching their gender identity, and began repeatedly describing transgender people as “mentally ill” in posts and floor remarks. In May 2025, Mace told Breitbart Radio that transgender ideology in schools and libraries was “pervasive,” saying, “This is everywhere,” and adding that “nothing you do is ever going to make you a woman. That’s just biological reality.” In September 2025 she said a school had forced her son to read an inclusive book, calling it “mentally ill ideology” and pledging that as governor she would “work hand-and-hand with the President to return power to parents and protect our children.” Major medical and psychological associations do not classify transgender identity as a mental illness, and the World Health Organization removed it from its mental disorders classification in 2019, reclassifying it under conditions related to s*xual health. States remain divided on gender-related medical care for minors, school policies and parental rights, an issue Mace has made central to her legislative agenda and her bid for South Carolina’s governorship.

Even relationships, routines, and beliefs are being looked at through different eyes. This does not feel like an energy asking us to do more. It feels like an energy asking us to become more honest. There is a lot being stripped away right now, especially the parts of ourselves that were built around survival, approval, obligation, and keeping everyone else comfortable. The collective has spent years waking up to what is happening outside of us. This next phase feels much more personal. We are being shown what still needs to awaken within us.
