He wagered that over 10 years, a simple S&P 500 index fund would beat a group of hedge funds hand-picked by professionals. Here's what happened 🧵 1. Buffett issued the challenge publicly. Ted Seides, co-manager of Protégé Partners, accepted. Seides picked 5 funds of funds, which together held stakes in more than 100 hedge funds. Buffett picked the Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund. 2. The bet ran from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2017. The hedge funds got off to a great start. In 2008, the S&P 500 crashed 37%, while the hedge funds lost far less. After year one, Wall Street was winning. 3. Then the market recovered, and the index fund just kept compounding. Year after year, the gap widened. Seides effectively conceded before the 10 years were up. 4. Final cumulative returns: S&P 500 index fund: +125.8% Fund of funds A: +21.7% Fund of funds B: +42.3% Fund of funds C: +87.7% Fund of funds D: +2.8% Fund of funds E: +27.0% Not one beat the index. 5. Annualized, it was 7.1% for the index fund vs. about 2.2% for the hedge funds. These were some of the smartest, best-paid people in finance. And they lost to a fund that just buys the whole market. 6. Why? Fees. Hedge funds typically charge a yearly management fee plus a cut of the profits. Funds of funds add another layer on top. Year after year, those costs ate the returns. 7. The money went to charity. Each side originally put in about $320,000, which was invested so it would grow to $1M. In 2012 they switched it into Berkshire Hathaway stock. By the end, it was worth over $2.2M, and it all went to Girls Inc. of Omaha. 8. The lesson: You don't need to be a genius to beat most professionals. Buy the market. Keep costs low. Be patient. Boring wins
