In late April, FLA and JNIM forces captured the city and its strategic base from Russia-backed Africa Corps in a sweeping offensive that saw the militant groups take a large swathe of the loosely populated north as well as some larger towns. The Africa Corps base in Kidal, retaken this week, was evacuated during the initial offensive after a deal was struck to allow encircled mercenaries there to withdraw.
Faytuks Network (@FaytuksNetwork) The Malian armed forces have recaptured the northern city of Kidal, five months after it fell to the Azawad Liberation Front and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen (JNIM), an al-Qaida-linked militant group. The Azawad Liberation Front stated it withdrew from the city to prevent civilian casualties from the "disproportionate use of aerial assets" by the Malian military and its allies.

The U.S. has urged Russia to disclose details about the death of a lab worker in Siberia, citing international health obligations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised the need for transparency, noting that Moscow’s information remains limited, reports WSJ
“We encourage Russia to be transparent and share more information with the world so that all of us could react accordingly and appropriately,” added Rubio, who was in Iceland to discuss security cooperation in the Arctic. “Maybe there’s nothing there. Maybe it’s bigger than we thought. We don’t know.”
The State Department has requested further details and is in talks with other nations. Despite some data shared with the WHO, Russia hasn’t answered key questions, such as the tests conducted.
Irkutsk’s governor reported earlier this week no microorganisms linked to the worker’s job. The WHO assesses the risk of pneumonic plague as “very low” outside Russia.
Officials say there is no indication the Russian case could trigger an outbreak as contagious as the Covid pandemic.

BREAKING: U.S. Embassy Moscow issues a Health Alert regarding the suspected pneumonic plague in Irkutsk
U.S. Embassy: The U.S. Embassy is aware of press reports from the Irkutsk region of suspected pneumonic plague resulting in the death of an individual and of associated quarantine measures in, and closures of, hospitals in Irkutsk. We continue to track the situation closely. The U.S. government has limited ability to help U.S. citizens in Russia, especially outside of Moscow. U.S. government personnel may face additional restrictions for personal and official travel to specific regions due to health and security concerns.
The State Department’s Level 4 Travel Advisory (Do Not Travel) for Russia remains in place and states U.S. citizens currently in Russia should depart immediately. U.S. citizens planning travel to Russia are again strongly advised not to travel to Russia due to risk of wrongful detention and security concerns.
