The Bunker, kitchen, 8:20 PM. Dean is at the table, laptop open, looking at a case. Selena just got home from school. She drops her backpack on a chair. She's holding a piece of paper. "Dad." Dean didn't answer. He kept typing. "Dad." "Hmm." Selena put the paper in front of him. "Parent-teacher conference. Tomorrow." Dean looked at it. "I can't tomorrow." "You said you'd come last week." "Last week I didn't know I'd have a case." Selena stayed quiet for a moment. "All the kids in my class—their dads come." Dean kept typing. "Well, I'm not their dad." Selena froze. Dean lifted his head. Saw her. Paused for a moment. Then looked back at the laptop. Selena picked up the paper. "Fine." She headed for the stairs. "Selena." "What." "How was school?" Selena turned back. "Now you're asking?" "I'm asking." "After you just said you're not my dad?" Dean blinked. "I didn't say that." "You said you're not their dad. Which means you... which means you just..." Selena took a breath. "Which means you don't even want to be my dad." "Selena, don't say it like that." "Then how should I say it?" Selena crumpled the paper. "You never come. Never. Last year's parent-teacher conference, Sam came. This year, Sam's coming too. Every year, Sam comes. And everyone thinks Sam is my dad." Dean closed the laptop. "Selena." "No. Let me talk." Selena walked toward him. "Do you know how many times I've said at school, 'My dad can't come, he's working'? Do you know how many times I've lied? Do you know how many times..." "Selena, stop." "How many times kids asked, 'Where's your dad?' and I said, 'He's working'... and they laughed?" "Selena!" Dean stood up. His chair scraped back. "I said stop!" Silence. Selena looked at him. Her eyes were wet. "Why?" "Because..." Dean took a breath. "Because I'm working. Because I'm trying to finish something. Because..." "Because I don't matter." "No. Don't say it like that." "Then how should I say it?" Selena's tears fell. "You didn't even say good morning to me today. You weren't here last night either. You've been gone for three days. And now you're here, sitting down, and I... I just wanted to tell you one thing. One small thing. A parent-teacher conference. That's all." Dean said nothing. Selena shook her head. "Forget it. It doesn't matter." She headed for the stairs. This time, Dean didn't stop her. Selena went upstairs. Her door closed. Dean stood in the kitchen. He ran his hand over his face. Sat down. Put his head in his hands. Sam came down the stairs from the upper floor. Glanced at Dean. Then at the stairs. Said nothing. Just grabbed a beer from the fridge and left. A little later, Dean goes to Selena's room. The door opens quietly. Dean comes in. Selena is lying on the bed. Facing the wall. She hasn't taken off her jacket. Dean closes the door softly. Walks over to the bed. Sits down on the floor. His back against the bed. Silence. "Selena... I know you're awake." "I'm asleep." "Okay. Then let me say it for when you wake up." Silence. Dean took a breath. "I... I treated you badly today." Selena didn't move. "And I know this isn't the first time. And I know this... this isn't enough. But I want to say that..." He paused. "When I'm angry, when I'm tired, when there's a case going bad, I... I dump everything in my head on whoever's around. And you... you're always there. And I... I think that because you're my daughter, because you're mine, you can take it. Because you won't leave. Because you have to stay. Because you..." His voice broke. "Because I don't know how to talk like this to someone who can leave. I only mistreat the person who has to stay. And that... that's pathetic. Because you don't have to. You never had to." Selena slowly turned over. Looked at him. Dean was still staring at the wall. "Dad." "Hmm." "Are you crying?" Dean ran his hand over his face. "No." Selena sat up. Went over to him. Sat on the floor. Beside him. "I don't want to leave." Dean looked at her.
