My wife and kids left me last month.
And honestly? Best sales training I’ve ever received.
Here’s what packing up the minivan and disappearing taught me about B2B sales:
If you’re not delivering value, they will churn.
I thought “being there” was enough. Turns out “being there but emotionally checked out, working late, and forgetting anniversaries” is just a really long discovery call that never converts.
Silence is the loudest objection.
No angry fight. No formal breakup meeting. Just… gone. Classic ghosting. And just like a prospect who goes dark after the demo, the deal is already dead — you’re just the last one to know.
You can’t close what you never truly qualified.
I assumed the relationship was “in the pipeline.” Never confirmed budget (emotional), authority (hers), need (actual partnership), or timeline (forever, apparently). Classic BANT failure.
Existing customers require more effort than new logos.
I was out hunting new “opportunities” (work, networking, LinkedIn thought leadership) while my biggest account was quietly evaluating alternatives. Retention > acquisition. I learned that the hard way… in an empty house.
Sometimes the best move is to let the deal die with dignity.
Chasing only makes you look desperate. I’ve stopped sending “just checking in” texts. In sales and in life, know when to update the CRM to Closed-Lost.
Pain is a powerful teacher. Losing everything forced me to become a better seller — more empathetic, more attentive, and slightly more aware that people (and buyers) have options.
Who else has turned personal rock bottom into pipeline wisdom?
Drop a 💼 if you’ve ever lost a “deal” that actually mattered.
