THE ANCIENT STONE THRONES THAT STILL HOLD SECRETS
On a sun-baked hillside in the ancient city of Hierapolis, Turkey, a row of weathered stone seats quietly preserves a story from nearly 2,000 years ago. These remarkable carvings were once part of the city’s grand theatre, where people gathered to watch performances and public spectacles during the Roman era.
Look closely at the spiral patterns carved into the stone. Even after centuries of wind, rain, and scorching sunlight, much of the craftsmanship remains visible. The people who created these seats are long gone, and the world they knew has disappeared, but their work has survived.
These were not ordinary places to sit. Some theatre seats were reserved for people with higher social status, offering them a privileged view of the events below. Imagine sitting here when Hierapolis was a thriving Roman city, surrounded by the noise of a crowded theatre. What performances took place in front of these seats? Who occupied them?
