February 7— Finished Hannibal on a rainy night close to my birthday. (1/3)

This book is one of my favourite books. Young Hannibal and how he was made into Hannibal The Cannibal is my Roman empire.

Further information about this novel :
Carmilla (1872)—positioned as a foundational asset in vampire literature. Context & Authorship • Written by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, an Irish Gothic writer. • First published serially in The Dark Blue magazine in 1871–1872, then as part of In a Glass Darkly. • Predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) by 25 years and directly influenced it. Plot Architecture • Framed as a case history, a common 19th-century Gothic technique. • Centers on Laura, a young woman living in isolation, and Carmilla, a mysterious girl taken into her home. • The relationship evolves into intimacy, obsession, illness, and finally revelation. • The vampire threat is uncovered through rational male authorities; doctors, generals, scholars; mirroring the era’s tension between desire and control. Influence on Dracula Stoker borrows heavily, including: • The vampire’s aristocratic lineage • The use of documents and testimonies • The medicalization of vampirism • The idea that vampirism spreads through intimacy • Even structural elements of investigation and extermination At an executive level, Carmilla is about: • Fear of female autonomy • Anxiety around same-sex desire • Illness as a metaphor for forbidden intimacy • The clash between the irrational (desire, dream, body) and the rational (science, patriarchy, daylight) • It reframes the vampire not as a brute, but as a beautiful existential threat.I had a gothic winter with Carmilla and Hannibal.

First explicitly lesbian vampire in Western literature : Carmilla’s desire is emotional, physical, and openly stated. This queerness is not subtext; it is the engine of the horror. The mother of vampires, Carmilla, was written even before Stoker's Dracula and his work is heavily influenced by Carmilla.
Vampirism is portrayed as: • Slow, intimate, seductive (not predatory in a crude sense) • Psychologically invasive rather than purely violent • The vampire is sympathetic, not just monstrous; another major innovation.The first full vampire novella/novel;
Carmilla as a Character : • One of the earliest examples of the femme fatale vampire. • Displays: • Hypnotic charm • Melancholy and boredom with immortality • Rebellion against social and sexual norms • A symbol of repressed female sexuality • A critique of Victorian moral panic • A tragic immortal rather than a simple villainP.S: There I was, completely in wonder and shock, by its beautiful classic way of writing.
