🚀🌌 Congratulations, Emebet Mehabaw! 🇪🇹🎉
The entire Yuri’s Night Ethiopia community is incredibly proud to celebrate Emebet on being selected as a 2026 Nebula Award Winner by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC)! This is a well-deserved recognition of her dedication and contributions to the space community.
Emebet was one of our in person guests at Yuri’s Night Ethiopia Global, held on April 18, 2026, and it was a privilege to have her join us. Beyond her achievements, she is one of the humblest people we have ever had the privilege of meeting, and her kindness and passion make her truly special.
We are proud to see her representing Ethiopia and the African space community on the global stage. Emebet is an inspiration to many Ethiopians, especially young people who dream of contributing to science, engineering, and space exploration. Her journey reminds us that Ethiopian talent belongs on the global stage. 🌍🚀

| 3 | When I was in elementary school, around gr 3, 4 and 5, things were rly d/t in Bale Robe. There were times when there was no peace in the city. We would hear gunshots, and sometimes hear about houses and cars being burned. Whenever sth happened, we wouldn’t have class. Back then i was too young to rly understand what was happening or how badly it was affecting other people. Whenever our teachers said, “ዛሬ ብጥብጥ አለ class የለም” I’d actually be happy because I didn’t have to go to school. I even used to wish those situations would continue, bcuz in my little mind, I thought as long as my family was safe everything was fine.
But one day, my dad told me he was gonna a conflict affected area for work to deliver supplies. That was when sth changed in me. I suddenly realized that the same conflict I had been seeing as a reason to miss school could actually put someone I love in danger. I remember thinking “Am I gonna lose my dad?”😭My dad works as a driver for an NGO and bcuz of his work, he has had to live and work in d/tt places, including areas affected by conflict. He once told me that his car was shot at during the Tigray war. He also lost friends, people he used to laugh and work alongside. As I grew older, I started to understand war d/tly. Behind every conflict r real people, families, children, parents, friends and communities whose lives can be deeply affected. The suffering can be physical, emotional and spiritual, and some wounds can stay with people long after the fighting ends. So let’s keep the people affected by conflict in our prayers❤️ We may sometimes feel like these things r far away from us but as long as we r living together, there’s always a way that what happens to one another affects us.

Here’s what happened:
I booked my passport appointment for the day before Christmas but they texted me and told me to come on the first day of First Class instead(around ጥቅምት). So I went there with my friend. It’s around a 1.5-hour journey from Haramaya to Dire Dawa and yk neither of us knew anything about how the whole thing worked. It started at the door with the security guard yelling at us😭 then we went to a block where there were a lot of people but no one was there to help us. Plus, the sun was literally burning me, so I started crying there. My tears were falling like someone had just hit me hard😭even my friend was shocked and kept telling me to calm down.
I was so angry bcuz why did they call me before my actual appointment if they were just gonna ignore me?😭they kept telling us to go to room 4, then 5, then 6, then 7, blah blah. They didn’t even seem to know what they were talking about🤦♀️
