Kudos to the author! Well thought out and articulates some of the pain points of our FX imbalance. There are a few things I would like to stress. First on transparency, "Currently, the central bank publishes clearing prices and allocation volumes. What it does not publish is who is winning, how concentrated the allocations are, and where the dollars actually flow after the auction closes. " This is very true. Right now, NBE doesn't publish how the bid is distributed among banks. I understand this can be sensitive to some banks. E.g., a bank with little or no participation indicates either a problem with its liquidity or overall performance. Shareholder confidence wears -> Liquidity weakens -> FX participation decreases. Downward spiral no banks would like to see. However, banks are competing in the open market. It's an opportunity for them to make a united front (via merger) against the bigger players. This dynamic will be the forcing function needed to make this change! So yeah, 100% on transparency. Secondly, "a dedicated priority allocation window for export-generating manufacturers". I can't upvote this enough. There is a rotten system within local banks to allocate FX to "importer" clients. Or friendly ones. Or worse, friendly ones with whom they share a beer on Saturday night. We don't need another ነጋዴ importing consumables from China. We need those folks at Hawassa Industrial Floor to export consumables. The incentives are all inverted. We need a directive to tilt this insanity. Thirdly, "Analysts interviewed by Capital Newspaper have explicitly recommended a digital portal linking forex demand and supply data across banks, allowing regulators to better assess market conditions before scheduling injections (Capital Newspaper, 2026)." Is this true?. I looked up the referenced article, and there is no mention of this analyst. And there won't be any need for NBE to have this portal because they already have it:) Fx (large ones) already go thourght NBE approval process. Hence, they effectively know what goes in and out. I think the author might have been confused this with the new FX trading platform? i.e No doubt its much-needed platform for interbank FX trading.

Laying out these cables in high seas is not easy task. There are handful of engineering companies that specialize in this niche.
