| 4 | 🎩 The Magic Shop – H.G. Wells
I had passed the shop many times before noticing it. Its window displayed curious objects—vanishing eggs, mechanical dolls, packs of cards that promised impossible tricks. My little boy, Gip, pressed his face against the glass and declared that we must go in.
The door opened softly, though I had not seen anyone touch it. Inside, the shop seemed deeper than it should have been. Mirrors reflected strange angles. Shelves held boxes that whispered of wonders.
A thin shopman appeared as if from nowhere. His smile was pleasant but unsettling. He produced tricks effortlessly—balls from behind Gip’s ear, glass marbles from empty space, a toy that became real in the child’s hands.
Gip was delighted. I was amused at first. Yet there was something curious in the way the tricks were done. They were too smooth, too complete. There were no hidden threads, no signs of clever machinery.
The shopman showed Gip a box that promised adventures, another that could hide objects instantly. He spoke of magic as though it were simple and practical.
At one point, I tried to examine a trick closely, determined to find its method. The shopman gently distracted me. Gip wandered deeper among the shelves. For a moment, I lost sight of him.
My heart quickened. The shop seemed to stretch endlessly, its passages folding into one another. Strange assistants appeared and vanished like shadows.
Then, as suddenly as we had entered, we were outside again on the ordinary street. Gip stood beside me, holding several small parcels. The shop itself was nowhere to be seen.
At home, Gip opened his packages. They contained exactly what the shopman had promised—real, working magic.
And to this day, I cannot say whether it was illusion, or something more.

| 7 | 📖 We learn a lot from books and from talking to people. That's the idea behind an initiative to create a 'human library'. You borrow a person you wouldn’t usually meet for a half-hour candid conversation and learn what it is like to be in their shoes. That's what Neil and Sam discuss, as they teach you related vocabulary.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run
So we'd both be free
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Wear a necklace of hope
Side by side with me
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run
So we'd both be free
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out for his love to flee
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree

| 17 | 🍂 The Cop and the Anthem – O. Henry
Soapy shifted on his park bench as the first cold wind of winter brushed his face. That was the signal. Winter was coming, and he had no home. For the past few years, he had solved this problem in the same way: he spent three comfortable months in prison on Blackwell’s Island, with meals and a roof provided by the city.
He rose with determination. Tonight, he would get himself arrested.
His first plan was simple. He entered a fine restaurant, intending to order an expensive meal and then admit he had no money. But the waiters noticed his worn clothes and pushed him out before he could sit down.
Next, he threw a stone through a shop window. The glass shattered loudly. A policeman came running. Soapy stood calmly, hands in pockets. Surely the criminal would not remain at the scene. The officer hurried past him and chased another man.
Soapy tried again. In a cheaper restaurant, he managed to eat. When he announced he had no money, the waiters threw him into the street. Still no policeman.
He pretended to be drunk, shouting nonsense on a busy corner. The officer nearby only laughed, assuming he was celebrating. Soapy attempted to annoy a young woman, hoping to be arrested for harassment—but she gladly took his arm, mistaking him for a companion.
Each attempt failed. The law refused to notice him.
Discouraged, Soapy wandered into a quiet street and stopped before a small church. From inside came the sound of an organ playing a soft anthem. The music touched him deeply. It reminded him of his younger days—of ambition, respectability, and hope. For the first time in a long while, he felt ashamed of his aimless life.
Suddenly he made a decision. He would change. Tomorrow he would find work. He would rebuild his life. The future no longer seemed impossible.
A heavy hand fell on his shoulder.
“What are you doing here?” asked a policeman.
“Nothing,” Soapy replied.
“Come along,” said the officer.
The next morning, Soapy was sentenced to three months on Blackwell’s Island.
🍂
