On this day, 84 years ago, SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich died. At the state funeral held in Berlin following his assassination, Adolf Hitler paid tribute to Heydrich, describing him as one of the best National Socialists and one of the strongest defenders of the Reich.

I have only a few words to devote to this dead man. He was one of the best National Socialists, one of the strongest defenders of the German Reich idea, one of the greatest opponents of all enemies of this Reich. He has fallen as a blood martyr for the preservation and protection of the Reich. As Führer of the party and as Führer of the German Reich I bestow on you, my dear comrade Heydrich, after party comrade Todt as the second German and highest decoration that I have to give: The Highest Level of the German Order. At his own request, Antonescu refused to be blindfolded, choosing instead to look his executioners in the eye. Religious infighting must stop. The modern day National Socialist movement has been subjected to constant religious quarrels. Instead of benefiting the movement or doing activism, people constantly divide it. If all of these channels who constantly promote infighting put nearly as much work into waking up new people as they currently put into dividing the movement, it would benefit the movement far more. On this day, 81 years ago, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler died. The circumstances of his death are still not fully known. Unlike the Allied version of Himmler taking his own life, his daughter claimed the exact opposite, insisting that he died by Allied hands.

Because he knew so much and could disprove all Allied claims against Germany and the Führer, he was killed on Churchill’s orders I believe, to keep him from talking. My father was not like his friend Dr. Goebbels, he believed we could work with the Allies after the war to combat communism and had nothing to fear. He told mother to stay at our home and to advise any Allied soldier we were the family of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, and we would be safe. -Interview with Gudrun by German journalist Stephan Lebert, 1999

In May 1945, shortly after Adolf Hitler’s death, Norwegian Nobel Prize winning novelist Knut Hamsun published an obituary in the newspaper Aftenposten. Hamsun described Hitler not as a tyrant, but as a heroic and misunderstood figure. Hamsun wrote:

I'm not worthy to speak up for Adolf Hitler, and to any sentimental rousing his life and deeds do not invite. Hitler was a warrior, a warrior for humankind and a preacher of the gospel of justice for all nations. He was a reforming character of the highest order, and his historical fate was that he functioned in a time of unequaled brutality, which in the end failed him. Thus may the ordinary Western European look at Adolf Hitler. And we, his close followers, bow our heads at his death.

On this day, 81 years ago, Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, was declared dead. Goebbels, known for his absolute devotion to the Führer and his role as one of the key pillars of the National Socialist movement, chose to meet the same fate as Hitler.

The Führer has ordered me, should the defense of the Reich capital collapse, to leave Berlin... For the first time in my life, I must categorically refuse to obey an order of the Führer... I shall not abandon the Führer in these last days. For the first time in my life, I am proud to be able to remain faithful to him to the end. I consider it an honor to share his fate.
