Ambient Lux Requirements NVDs are passive receptors; they require ambient light (moonlight, starlight, cultural lighting) to function. High Contrast: >50% lunar illumination provides optimal resolution. Low Contrast: <20% lunar illumination or heavy cloud cover significantly degrades signal, increasing noise and reducing identification range. In absolute zero-light (e.g., subterranean), NVDs are useless without supplemental IR illumination hence why we see Laser Modules/IR Flashers on weapons.
