Issei Sagawa — today a restaurant critic whose reviews Tokyo’s press eagerly publishes — was once Japan’s most infamous cannibal. In 1981, while studying English literature at the Sorbonne, he murdered and ate his academic girlfriend. Arrested by French police, he was declared mentally unfit to stand trial and deported to Japan. After a year and a half in a psychiatric hospital, he was released. Now sixty, Sagawa lives freely in Tokyo. In Japan, he’s something of a celebrity — invited to public events as a guest, asked to comment on current affairs. One might say, by grim irony, that Sagawa knows fine dining from the inside. He admits that thoughts of eating someone still cross his mind — but insists, “It will never happen again.” Visual vibe

A brief note for context: the "bloomers" mentioned twice refer to women's trousers resembling harem pants, first championed by American suffragist Amelia Bloomer starting in the 1840s—when women wearing pants was considered utterly scandalous. Bloomers didn’t become common on city streets until the late 19th-century "bicycle craze," when women eagerly embraced the new pastime. Their appearance often caused public uproar, sometimes even prompting police intervention. Yet supporters of progress stood by them. One journalist wrote: “The days are gone when a lady faints at a man’s glance at her ankle. Women have perfectly ordinary legs—and they’re meant to be used. This realization marks the dawn of a new era.” Etiquette posed its own dilemmas: Was it proper for a woman to accept help from a stranger when struggling uphill? Hence, rule number 11. Here are the rules: 1. Don’t be afraid! 2. While riding, avoid fainting dramatically. 3. Skip the刻意 “bicyclist’s” facial expression—keep it natural. 4. Never enter a church in your cycling attire. 5. Invention of the serpentine brick wall is credited to Thomas Jefferson — the man whose portrait appears on the U.S. two-dollar bill (though not because of this particular design). So what makes a wavy wall better than a straight one? From basic geometry, we know the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Yet surprisingly, a serpentine wall requires fewer bricks than a straight wall of the same length — and it's also more stable. Here's why: you can't reliably build a long straight wall just one brick thick (what builders call "half-brick" construction). It would collapse with even a light push. Straight walls need to be at least two bricks wide, or reinforced with buttresses at regular intervals. A wavy wall, however, uses its curved folds to create natural structural support. Each arch acts like a built-in buttress, allowing the entire structure to stand firm even when only one brick thick. The shape itself provides strength — a perfect blend of form and function.
