pichle saal bhi mai iss tareekh pe bakchodi hi kar rhi thi

then the second movie starts and suddenly these two people who could apparently not live without each other are exhausted by each other after four years of marriage. this was very shocking for me, especially from manu’s side because in the first film, his entire personality revolved around yearning for tanu. so seeing him detached and emotionally frustrated after four years of marriage was jarring. but then you realize that the first film was built on longing and not compatibility. tanu and manu are both constantly trying to punish each other emotionally instead of communicating. tanu reacts to it through rebellion. she meets exes, involves random men in her chaos, tries to trigger jealousy, and weaponizes emotional instability as a way to regain control. the film often frames these actions as quirky, but if you remove the comedic tone for a second, they are genuinely manipulative and harmful. but manu is not a saint either ofc. instead of confronting the collapse of his marriage, he emotionally transfers himself onto kusum, a very much younger girl who resembles tanu physically but represents the emotional opposite of her. the whole situation becomes unfair to kusum from the very beginning because she enters the relationship sincerely while manu is still psychologically entangled with his wife. the film romanticizes this confusion ofc because love story lol, but when looked at critically, kusum becomes collateral damage in a marriage that neither tanu nor manu knows how to leave properly. the ending is emotionally satisfying but ethically very uncomfortable. the film ultimately prioritizes the soulmate narrative between tanu and manu, while kusum’s heartbreak becomes secondary because she does not possess the same narrative importance.

watched tanu weds manu and tanu weds manu returns back to back and i have thoughts because what the hell was all that. first of all, manu in the first movie. the way he adored tanu was beautiful. the way he looks at her throughout the film, yearning constantly, completely overwhelmed by her existence?????madhavan played that sincerity so well that even when the writing became questionable (very often), you still understood why he loved her so intensely. BUTBUTBUT that first interaction was creepy man. clicking pictures was one thing, but kissing her crossed a line completely. very classic bollywood thing though, so i guess we can ignore that lol. and tanu herself was confusing to me because the films want her to symbolize freedom and rebellion, but rebellion against what exactly? her parents were comparatively supportive. nobody was imprisoning her. it often felt like she was rebelling for the sake of rebelling. and if you want freedom so badly then at least commit to it fully instead of constantly oscillating between the two things. still, the first film worked cuz i still am obsessed with the way manu looked at tanu especially "yun hi".
