| 2 | In ancient Rome, criminals could be sentenced to face wild beasts in the Colosseum—lions, for example. Emperor Gallienus handed down just such a punishment to a merchant who had sold the emperor's wife fake jewels. But when the man stood trembling in the arena, a chicken emerged from the cage instead of a lion, sparking widespread laughter. Gallienus declared: "He deceived others and has now been deceived himself," then ordered the merchant released and sent home.

| 8 | Royal Reward
Once, a report arrived at the desk of Nicholas I from the Saint Petersburg garrison guardhouse—a complaint penned by a naval officer held in custody there. The sailor reported that a guards officer imprisoned alongside him had been allowed to leave the cell for several hours. The acting guard commander, who had just taken duty, was the arrested guardsman’s friend—and let him go home.
Upon confirming the complaint was true, Nicholas ordered both officers—both the detainee and the guard commander who had released him—tried by court-martial. Both were stripped of their ranks and demoted to the ranks.
As for the informant, the Emperor ordered him to be rewarded with one-third of a month’s salary. But with one strict instruction: it must be clearly noted in his service record exactly what this royal reward was for.

| 13 | In English, the ace gets its name from the Old French word "as," meaning "one." Historically, the ace was the lowest-ranking card in a deck, marked simply with a "1." Over time, though, it flipped roles—rising to become the most powerful card. In games like poker or blackjack, players can even choose its value: either as the highest card or as one. The French Revolution played a big part in this shift, as the ace came to symbolize the common person's triumph over royalty. Beyond cards, the term "ace" also evolved to describe someone who's reached the peak of their profession—a true expert in their field.

| 14 | In many forms of motorsport, it's customary for the race winner, along with the second- and third-place finishers, to celebrate the end of the podium ceremony with a champagne spray. This tradition dates back to the 1960s, when driver Dan Gurney first doused the crowd with bubbly. After winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1967, organizers presented Gurney with a bottle of champagne. Overcome with excitement, he popped the cork and immediately started spraying everyone nearby. The gesture quickly caught on and has since become a staple of victory celebrations. So widespread is the tradition that even in races held in Muslim countries—where alcohol is prohibited—specially prepared non-alcoholic sparkling drinks are used instead for the celebratory spray.

| 16 | King George VI, as head of the United Kingdom, was at war with Germany. Yet technically, he also remained head of neutral Ireland and had to sign the credentials of German envoys. In 1947, during the Indo-Pakistani conflict, George VI found himself effectively at war with himself—since he was head of state for both nations.

| 20 | Did you know the handshake—a gesture we now take for granted—was once a matter of survival, a silent promise of safety?
Ancient people would show their open palms upon meeting, proving they carried no weapons. But by the time of the Roman Empire, bare palms weren't enough. Many could conceal daggers in their sleeves. So Romans and those nearby began grasping each other’s wrist during greetings, holding the hand at belt level—to ensure no blade was hidden and intentions were truly peaceful.
