Among Germany's educated professions, physicians displayed one of the strongest levels of early support for National Socialism. Evidence from the Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB), Germany's largest biographical encyclopedia, illustrates this trend. In the NDB sample, 36.7% of physicians and medical graduates had joined the NSDAP by 1933, the highest proportion of any major academic discipline. Engineering ranked second at 23.1%, while history (8%), politics (8%), and theology (10%) were among the least represented. The enthusiasm of physicians for National Socialism was not confined to students or early party members. During the Third Reich, approximately 45–50% of all German physicians became members of the NSDAP, compared with roughly 20–25% of the adult German population at the Party's peak. Physicians were therefore represented in the NSDAP at around twice the rate expected from the general population. Doctors were likewise heavily overrepresented in the SS: approximately 7% of German physicians joined the organization, a proportion several times higher than that of German society as a whole. For comparison, only about 25% of German lawyers joined the NSDAP. Long before Hitler came to power, German medicine had become a leading center for Rassenhygiene and eugenics. Physicians increasingly regarded themselves not only as healers of individual patients but also as guardians of the biological health of the Volksgemeinschaft ("national community").
