BarakAllahu feekum.
Alhamdulillah, today we successfully completed our Linguistic Study of the Qiṣār al-Mufaṣṣal (Nahw, Sarf, and Balaghah) course after 20 sessions.
This journey began in the blessed month of Ramadan and took us through the short surahs of the Qur’an, from Surah ad-Duha to Surah an-Nas. Along the way, we explored their grammatical structures, highlighted important morphological and rhetorical points, and reflected on some of their meanings and lessons.
One of the greatest ways to study Arabic grammar is to see it applied directly to the Book of Allah. Rather than studying rules in isolation, students were able to witness how Nahw, Sarf, and Balaghah come together in understanding the language of the Qur’an.
May Allah accept the efforts of all the students who participated, reward them for their dedication, and increase us all in beneficial knowledge. We ask Allah to grant us a deeper understanding of His Book and allow us to continue serving it through learning and teaching.
A new journey awaits, in sha Allah.

What makes Hidāyat al-Naḥw such a powerful grammar text is not merely the amount of information it contains, but the precision of its organisation.
The text takes the student step by step through the structure of the Arabic language itself.
It first gathers and discusses the major principles related to the Ism.
Then it transitions into the rulings and discussions pertaining to the Fi‘l.
Then finally, the Ḥarf.
This systematic organisation allows the student to build grammar in a structured and coherent manner instead of studying disconnected rules in isolation.

In this course, we explored the history of Arabic literature and studied selected samples of literature from different periods, engaging with both poetry and prose across the classical tradition.
I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta‘ala to place barakah in this effort and to make it beneficial for all who participated. Alhamdulillah for His tawfiq throughout.
BarakAllahu feekum.
What would you like to study next?
One root.
Three vowelizations.
Three meanings.
Welcome to the world of Muthallath Qutrub, one of the most fascinating gateways into the depths of the Arabic language.
This is not merely a vocabulary course.
It is training in how Arabs understood the language and how they used it.
Through this classical text, students discover how a slight change in the vowel (Harakah) transforms the meaning entirely, opening the door to stronger reading comprehension, sharper linguistic intuition, and a richer command of Arabic vocabulary.
A science preserved and taught for centuries in Islamic seminaries across the world, and still studied within the renowned Mauritanian tradition and other traditions.
In this program, students will:
• Study the complete Muthallathat of Qutrub
• Build a powerful Arabic vocabulary through a classical method
• Develop greater precision in reading and understanding texts
• Explore the subtleties and beauty of Arabic expression
• Strengthen their connection to classical literature and Islamic sciences
For the serious student of Arabic, this is a rare opportunity to study a text seldom taught in a structured and accessible manner.

Two classical ways of enriching your Arabic vocabulary.
One of the biggest obstacles a student of Arabic faces at the beginning of their journey is a lack of vocabulary. This lack of vocabulary means that when they read Arabic texts, they cannot understand them properly and have to stop almost every other sentence to look up words. Vocabulary acquisition, therefore, is the foundation of language learning. Without vocabulary, you cannot truly progress in any language. Rules alone are of little benefit if you have nothing to apply them to.
The scholars of Arabic traditionally followed two classical methods in acquiring vocabulary:
1. Reading Arabic texts and memorizing poetry.
2. Memorizing vocabulary-based works such as the Muthallathāt, al-Maqṣūr wal-Mamdūd, and similar texts.
The Muthallathāt are among the best entry points into gaining Arabic vocabulary. Why? Because they introduce the student to a single root and demonstrate how changing the vowelization changes the meaning.
For example, the root: غ م ر
By changing the harakah, you get:
غَمْر ، غِمْر ، غُمْر
Three different words with three different meanings, all from one root.
This is undoubtedly a shortcut to acquiring essential Arabic vocabulary. You learn one root and immediately gain multiple words through it.
After both studying and teaching the Muthallathāt myself, I saw a clear impact on my reading ability. Whenever I encountered these roots and their vowel variations in texts, my mind would immediately return to the lines of Muthallath Qutrub, allowing me to recall the meaning instantly without consulting a dictionary.
This is why the علماء placed such importance on these works. Many scholars versified Muthallath al-Qutrub, explained it, and even authored their own compilations of Muthallathāt, carefully gathering roots whose meanings changed with changes in vowelization.
It is a simple yet effective way to learn vocabulary: learn one root, change the harakah, and you unlock new words and meanings.
Alhamdulillah, Ustadh Mustafa will be teaching Muthallath Qutrub through three of its most important texts:
• The poem of al-Bahnasī
• Its poetic explanation by Ibn Zurayq
• The poem of al-Maghribī
Not only will students enjoy these texts as works of Arabic literature, but they will also acquire a good amount of vocabulary that will form the bedrock of their Arabic language journey. In addition to that, students will benefit from one of the greatest Arabic dictionaries ever written: Muʿjam Maqāyīs al-Lughah.
Do not lose this opportunity.

A very important discipline from the disciplines of the Arabic language is علم اللغة, also known as علم متن اللغة and علم المفردات, Arabic lexicography.
This discipline focuses on the study of Arabic vocabulary so that a student can increase their reading comprehension, recognize roots and their meanings, understand how words are used, and correctly understand and pronounce them.
The scholars of Arabic developed many methods for studying vocabulary. Some studied vocabulary through poetry and prose, while others gathered specific categories of words and studied them independently.
One famous category is known as المثلثات, words in which the meaning changes simply by changing a single vowel (harakah): فتحة، ضمة، كسرة.
For example, consider the root غ م ر:
غَمْر
غِمْر
غُمْر
Each variation carries a different meaning. Simply changing the حركة on one letter changes the meaning of the word.
Many scholars authored works on المثلثات. Among the earliest and most famous is the compilation of Qutrub رحمه الله, one of the great classical linguists of the Arabic language.
Later scholars versified these مثلثات into poetry, including:
• The poem of al-Bahnasī
• The poetic explanation of Ibn Zurayq
• The poem of al-Maghribī
These three poetic works revolve around the مثلثات of Qutrub.
There are also larger works on this subject, such as the works of al-Baṭalyusī and the lengthy poem of Ibn Mālik رحمه الله on المثلثات.
If you wish to become acquainted with the discipline of علم متن اللغة, enrich your Arabic vocabulary, and understand how root meanings function in Arabic, then this course is an excellent opportunity.
Ustadh Mustafa has designed a comprehensive study of مثلثات Qutrub, bringing together the three poetic versifications in one structured course.
The course will also include benefits from one of the greatest Arabic dictionaries ever written:
Muʿjam Maqāyīs al-Lughah by the great linguist Ibn Fāris رحمه الله, a dictionary renowned for exploring the underlying shared meanings between Arabic roots.
Under Ustadh Mustafa’s guidance, students will study these مثلثات while also gaining exposure to the benefits of Maqāyīs al-Lughah and the deeper meanings of Arabic roots.
This is a rare opportunity to study an important discipline of the Arabic language and benefit from one of the finest traditions of Arabic lexicography.
