(i) It allows grazed pasture in a paddock adequate time to rest, regenerate, and regrow before it is grazed again.
(ii) It helps to break the life cycle of internal parasites (such as worms), thereby reducing parasite/disease infestation in the herd.
(iii) It ensures even/uniform utilization of the available pasture, prevents overgrazing and soil erosion, and increases the overall carrying capacity of the land.

(4a)
(i) Gene: A gene is a segment of DNA molecule located on a chromosome that controls a particular inherited characteristic or trait in an organism. Examples include gene for coat colour, body size, and milk production.
(ii) Allele: Alleles are different forms or variations of the same gene that occupy the same locus or position on a pair of homologous chromosomes. Example: B and b are alleles for beef and milk production.
(4b)
Inbreeding depression is the decline in vigor, productivity, fertility, growth rate, and general performance of offspring that results from continuous mating between closely related individuals over several generations. In other words It occurs because harmful recessive genes become homozygous, leading to expression of undesirable traits such as low milk yield, small body size, increased disease susceptibility, and high mortality rate.
(4c)
Let: B = gene for high beef production, b = gene for high milk production
(4ci)
Illustrate the crossing of their offspring in F1 to F2 generation. (3 marks)
Parental cross: P1
Sokoto Gudali x Red Bororo
BB x bb
Gametes: B, B x b, b
F1 Generation
All offspring = Bb
All F1 are dual purpose cattle
F1 cross to produce F2
Bb x Bb
Punnett Square for F2
B b
B BB Bb
b Bb bb
Genotypic ratio in F2: 1 BB : 2 Bb : 1 bb
Phenotypic ratio in F2: 1 Beef : 2 Dual purpose : 1 Milk
(4cii)
All the F1 offspring, 4 out of 4 or 100%, will be dual purpose cattle.
Reason: All F1 have genotype Bb
(4ciii)
1 : 1
Reason: Beef producers BB = 1, Milk producers bb = 1
(4civ)
2 out of 4, or 50%
Reason: Heterozygous = Bb. There are 2 Bb in F2

(5a)
Drenching is the oral administration of liquid medication, anthelmintics, vaccines, or nutritional supplements to farm animals using a drenching gun, bottle, or tube. In other words It ensures that the correct dose of drug is given directly into the mouth to control internal parasites, treat diseases, and improve animal health and productivity.
(5b)
(i) Incubation stage: This is the period between the entry of the pathogen and the appearance of the first clinical signs of the disease.
(ii) Clinical stage: This is when the visible signs and symptoms of the disease become apparent in the animal.
(iii) Recovery or death stage: This is the final stage where the animal either recovers from the disease or dies depending on severity and treatment.
(5c)
(i) Causes anaemia and poor growth: Lice suck blood from animals, leading to blood loss, anaemia, weakness, and reduced weight gain.
(ii) Reduces feed intake and productivity: Infested animals become restless and irritated, scratching and rubbing, which reduces feeding time and milk/meat production.
(iii) Damages hides and skins: Constant scratching and biting causes wounds, scars, and poor quality hides and skins, thereby reducing their market value.
(iv) Transmission of diseases: Lice act as vectors and can transmit diseases such as swine pox and other pathogens from one animal to another.
(v) Increases cost of production: Farmers spend more money on acaricides, insecticides, labor, and veterinary services to control lice, thus reducing profit.

(1a)
(i) It serves as a fermentation chamber where rumen microorganisms (bacteria and protozoa) break down cellulose and other fibrous plant materials.
(ii) It is a storage/reservoir organ where ingested feed is temporarily kept before being regurgitated for rumination (chewing the cud).
(iii) It is the site of synthesis of microbial protein from non-protein nitrogen sources such as urea.
(iv) It is the site of synthesis of B-complex vitamins and vitamin K by the rumen microflora, and it also absorbs the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced from fermentation, which serve as an energy source to the animal.
(1b)
(i) Swelling and reddening of the vulva with a slight mucus discharge.
(ii) Enlargement and filling of the udder with milk (udder becomes tight and shiny).
(iii) Restlessness, pawing the ground, and the ewe separating herself from the rest of the flock.
(iv) Relaxation/sinking of the pelvic ligaments, giving a hollow appearance around the tail head, accompanied by frequent lying down and standing up.
(1c)
Pulmonary circulation is the movement of deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs, where it is oxygenated, and its return as oxygenated blood to the left atrium of the heart; it deals purely with gaseous exchange. WHILE Systemic circulation, on the other hand, is the movement of oxygenated blood from the left ventricle of the heart through the aorta to all body tissues and organs, and the return of deoxygenated blood to the right atrium; it is responsible for supplying nutrients and oxygen to body cells and removing waste products.

(2a)
(i) It allows for better disease and parasite control since the pigs are confined and can be closely monitored.
(ii) It ensures efficient utilization of land, as more pigs can be reared on a smaller area of land.
(iii) It permits easier management practices such as feeding, record keeping, and health monitoring.
(iv) It protects the pigs from predators and harsh weather conditions, and allows for faster growth rate due to controlled feeding and breeding.
(2b)
(i) Provision of a balanced ration appropriate to the growth stage (grower and finisher feeds) to promote adequate weight gain.
(ii) Routine vaccination and deworming of the animals against common diseases and internal parasites.
(iii) Regular weighing of the animals to monitor growth rate and adjust feeding/management accordingly, along with provision of adequate housing and clean water at all times.
(2c)
(i) Poor transportation and road network, which leads to delays and spoilage of perishable animal products.
(ii) Lack of adequate storage and processing/preservation facilities (e.g., cold rooms), resulting in post-harvest losses.
(iii) Unstable/fluctuating prices of animal products and the activities of exploitative middlemen who deny farmers fair returns.

(3a)
(i) They are fed in relatively small quantities compared to the basal/regular feed.
(ii) They are rich in specific nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, or protein, which are used to correct deficiencies in the basal diet.
(iii) They are not complete feeds on their own but are meant to complement/balance the regular ration.
(iv) They are usually palatable and may be presented in different forms such as blocks, powder, or liquid to encourage intake by the animals.
(3bi)
From the diagram, the total rangeland measures 90 m × 40 m, divided equally into 4 paddocks (2 columns × 2 rows). Stylo (with carpet grass) is found in Paddock 1 and Paddock 3.
Dimension of each paddock = 90 m ÷ 2 = 45 m (length) by 40 m ÷ 2 = 20 m (width)
Area of Paddock 1 = 45 m × 20 m = 900 m²
Area of Paddock 3 = 45 m × 20 m = 900 m²
Total area under stylo = 900 m² + 900 m² = 1,800 m²
Spacing = 60 cm × 30 cm = 0.6 m × 0.3 m = 0.18 m² per plant
Population of stylo = Total area ÷ Spacing area
= 1,800 m² ÷ 0.18 m²
= 10,000 stylo plants
