*WAEC GCE ECONOMICS* *NUMBER THREE* (3a) (PICK ANY THREE) (i) Increase in the price of travel bags: When the price of travel bags increases, consumers may reduce the quantity they demand because the bags become more expensive. Some consumers may postpone buying new travel bags or continue using their old bags. According to the law of demand, an increase in price leads to a decrease in quantity demanded, other things being equal. (ii) Decrease in consumers’ income: A fall in consumers’ income can reduce the demand for travel bags because people will have less money to spend on non-essential goods. Consumers may decide to use their old bags instead of buying new ones or spend their limited income on basic necessities such as food, clothing and housing. (iii) Change in taste and fashion: A change in consumers’ tastes and preferences can reduce the demand for travel bags. If consumers no longer consider a particular type of travel bag fashionable or attractive, they may stop buying it. They may prefer other types of bags, thereby reducing the demand for travel bags in the country. (iv) Decrease in the number of travellers: A reduction in the number of people travelling within or outside the country can reduce the demand for travel bags. This may happen when people travel less because of insecurity, high transportation costs, unemployment or economic difficulties. Since fewer people need bags for travelling, the demand for travel bags will fall. (v) Availability of substitutes: The availability of alternative products, such as backpacks, duffel bags and other suitable carriers, can reduce the demand for travel bags. When these substitutes are cheaper, more durable or more convenient, consumers may prefer to buy them instead. Consequently, the demand for travel bags will decrease. (3bi) Price of computers increases by 40%: The quantity demanded of computers will decrease because an increase in price makes computers more expensive. Consumers may reduce their purchases or switch to substitutes. This illustrates the law of demand, which states that the higher the price, the lower the quantity demanded, other things being equal. (3bii) Price of components used to produce computers falls by 60%: The supply of computers will increase because the cost of production has fallen. Producers can manufacture more computers at a lower cost, which may reduce the market price. As a result, the quantity demanded of computers will increase due to the lower price. (3biii) Subsidies granted to computer manufacturers reduce by 70%: The supply of computers will decrease because manufacturers receive less financial assistance from the government. Their cost of production may increase, causing them to produce and supply fewer computers. This may lead to higher prices and a decrease in the quantity demanded of computers.

Examine the narrator as a tool in the hands of the Brotherhood.* 1. *Recruited for His Voice:* The Brotherhood recruits the narrator not for his ideas but because he is a powerful Black speaker who can win Harlem for them. 2. *Used as a Token:* He is kept as a token Black face to show the Brotherhood is inclusive, but he is never allowed into real decision-making. 3. *Given Limited Ideology:* He is taught to speak only the Brotherhood's ideology, not his own experiences. His speeches are censored and scripted. 4. *Deployed and Discarded:* He is sent to Harlem when useful, and abandoned when Harlem is no longer politically useful to the Brotherhood's strategy. 5. *Loss of Identity:* The Brotherhood gives him a new name and new identity, stripping him of his individuality. He becomes invisible even within the organization. 6. *Realization:* At the end he realizes he was just a tool - "a cog in the machine" - and the Brotherhood betrayed him like Bledsoe and Norton did. *6. How does the narrator respond to Dr. Bledsoe's accusation of betrayal after he drove Mr Norton to the black quarters?* 1. *Shock and Disbelief:* The narrator is initially shocked because he thought he was obeying Mr. Norton's request to see the real Black life. 2. *Attempt to Explain and Defend:* He tries to explain that Mr. Norton forced him to drive to the quarters and to Trueblood's house, but Bledsoe refuses to listen. 3. *Fear and Pleading:* He pleads for mercy, kneeling and begging Bledsoe not to destroy his future because college is his only hope of escaping poverty. 4. *Feeling of Betrayal:* He feels betrayed himself because Bledsoe, a Black educator who should protect Black students, is sacrificing him to please a white benefactor. 5. *Resigned Acceptance:* When Bledsoe decides to expel him but gives him letters to find a job in New York, the narrator naively accepts, still trusting Bledsoe. 6. *Later Understanding:* Only later does he understand Bledsoe's philosophy of power and lies - that Bledsoe maintains power by deceiving both Blacks and whites. EMILY BRONTE: WUTHERING HEIGHTS *7. Examine Heathcliff's treatment of Hareton.* Hareton is Hindley's son. Heathcliff's treatment is revenge: 1. *Revenge on Hindley:* Heathcliff sees Hareton as a means to revenge Hindley Earnshaw who degraded him as a child. He does to Hareton what Hindley did to him. 2. *Denial of Education:* He deliberately stops Hareton from going to school, keeps him illiterate, unrefined and rough, making him a servant in his own house. 3. *Degradation and Servitude:* He makes Hareton work as a farm labourer at Wuthering Heights, denies him his inheritance and treats him like an animal. 4. *Physical and Verbal Abuse:* He insults, mocks and sometimes beats Hareton, hardening the boy's character. 5. *Unconscious Affection:* Despite his cruelty, Heathcliff sometimes shows strange attachment to Hareton because Hareton's eyes remind him of Catherine. 6. *Failed Revenge:* His plan fails because Hareton remains naturally good, kind and noble despite the degradation, unlike Heathcliff himself. *8. How do Catherine and Isabella perceive love in marriage?* 1. *Catherine - Love as Identity:* Catherine perceives love as spiritual oneness. She says "I AM Heathcliff". Her love for Heathcliff is wild, natural and soul-deep, not based on material things. 2. *Catherine - Marriage as Status:* She sees marriage to Edgar Linton as a social elevation. She says marrying Heathcliff would degrade her. So she separates love and marriage. 3. *Isabella - Love as Romantic Fantasy:* Isabella, raised in sheltered Thrushcross Grange, perceives love as romantic, passionate and bookish. She is infatuated by Heathcliff's brooding looks. 4. *Isabella - Marriage as Escape:* She sees marriage to Heathcliff as an escape into passion, but she quickly realizes it is hell. Heathcliff marries her only for revenge and to inherit. 5. *Contrast:* Catherine's love is mature and tragic - she knows what love is but sacrifices it.
