The UK government has issued a stark ultimatum to the Chinese owners of the Scunthorpe steel plant: keep the last remaining blast furnaces running or face jail time. Jingye Group claims the plant is too costly to operate, but shutting it down would permanently destroy the furnaces. In response, Prime Minister Starmer is fast-tracking legislation to seize control of the plant and enforce compliance with the threat of two-year prison sentences for non-cooperative managers. The move is framed as part of the government’s renewed economic stability and commitment to preserving the UK’s steel industry. #HM #HMIntelligence

Estonian authorities have seized the crude oil tanker KIWALA in the Baltic Sea, marking the country's first interception of a Russian "shadow" vessel. The ship, en route to Russia’s Ust-Luga port, was sailing near Estonian waters and carried 24 crew members, including a Chinese captain and likely Mauritanian nationals. Though it sailed under the Djibouti flag, Djiboutian officials denied any official registration. Estonia exercised its right to detain the ship for inspection, with Police and Border Guard chief Veiko Kommusaar confirming the tanker is subject to sanctions. #HM #HMIntelligence

Police and fire crews are investigating a major fire at Fenix Battery Recycling in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, which broke out on Wednesday—exactly a year after a previous blaze at the same site. Ten fire engines were dispatched, and crews remained overnight to extinguish the flames and monitor hotspots. While no casualties were reported, nearby homes were evacuated, and residents were advised to stay indoors and avoid touching debris. North Ayrshire Council expressed concern over the repeated incidents and is engaging with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), which had previously revoked the site's waste licence due to non-compliance. SEPA and emergency services are continuing to monitor the situation, and a joint investigation into the cause is underway. #HM #HMIntelligence

Two large camps in northern Syria, originally established during the Syrian civil war to house displaced Syrians and prevent their entry into Turkey, are now being repurposed to accommodate hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans, according to Syrian sources. As stability returns to Syria and many Syrians begin to go back home, Turkey and Qatar—reportedly working with the new Syrian government—are leading this initiative. Turkish organizations Avaaz and IHH are said to be managing the plan, though they have not responded to inquiries. Unconfirmed reports suggest this resettlement effort may be tied to a broader deal involving U.S. recognition of the Syrian government in return for lifted sanctions, but this remains unverified.
