A legendary Ethiopian saxophonist, arranger, and composer. He was a founding member of The Equators, a versatile group of young musicians formed in 1975, which renamed itself The Dahlak Band in 1976.
Despite the tight restrictions of the Derg regime, the band secured a famous residency at Ghion Hotel, where they played by blending Western soul, funk, and R&B with traditional Ethiopian modes.
He shaped the sound of major stars, most notably arranging vocalist Muluken Melesse's iconic 1975–1976 debut album. He also stepped into the spotlight as a frontman with his own rare instrumental album, Tilaye's Saxophone with the Dahlak Band, which captured a raw, late-night vibe using just a single microphone at the Ghion Hotel.
Tilaye later joined the world-renowned Walias Band and permanently relocated to the United States touring Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean, backing legendary vocalists like Tilahun Gessesse, Mahmoud Ahmed, and Aster Aweke. | 157 |
