| 4 | The Principle of Leaving the Better Option for a Greater Benefit
Shaykh Al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah said:
“...Nevertheless, the correct view is that something which is normally not recited aloud may sometimes be recited aloud when there is a greater benefit in doing so. Therefore, it is permissible for the imam to recite aloud at times, for example, in order to teach the people praying behind him. It is also permissible for those praying to say short phrases aloud on occasion.
It is also permissible for a person to leave what is better in order to bring hearts together and maintain unity, out of fear that people may be driven away from something beneficial.
This is similar to what the Prophet ﷺ did when he left the Ka‘bah without rebuilding it upon the foundations laid by Ibrāhīm. This was because Quraysh were still new to Islam and he feared that doing so would repel them. He therefore considered the benefit of unity and harmony to be more important than rebuilding the Ka‘bah upon the foundations of Ibrāhīm.
Likewise, when Ibn Mas‘ūd completed the prayer (as four) behind ‘Uthmān and was criticised for doing so, he was asked about it. He replied: ‘Disagreement is evil.’
For this reason, the imams, such as Imām Aḥmad and others, explicitly stated that this principle applies to matters such as the Basmalah, joining the Witr prayers, and other matters in which one leaves the better option for something permissible but less preferable. This is done in order to maintain harmony among those praying behind the imam, or to teach them the Sunnah, and similar reasons.”

| 10 | #LIFE_LESSONS
Advice is often cheapest when it is simply listened to. Experience can be a very expensive teacher!
Sometimes, sincere advice is given out of genuine concern. You can either take the advice and benefit from it, or dismiss it and wait until experience teaches you the lesson.
Example 1:
“Auntie, don’t display pictures of all your achievements on social media. You risk exposing yourself and your family to the evil eye.”
Response: “No, it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with it.”
A few days later, the auntie suddenly falls unwell. She develops unexplained symptoms and becomes unable to walk. The doctors are unable to determine the cause.
“I need a rāqī. Do you know anyone?”
Some learn the easy way. Others learn the hard way.
---
Example 2:
“Sister, avoid discussing your marital problems with other people. Not everyone wants good for you, and once private matters leave your home, you can’t control where they end up.”
Response: “It’s okay. I only told one sister; she’s trustworthy.”
A few months later, her marital problems have become the talk of the town.
Sister Fulānah told Sister Fulānah, who told Sister Fulānah… and now everyone knows.
The sister feels embarrassed and exposed. She wishes she had kept the matter private, especially because the involvement of others only made the situation worse.
Some learn the easy way. Others learn the hard way.
---
Example 3:
“Brother, don’t rush into a major financial decision without seeking advice from people who have experience. Take your time and investigate properly.”
Response: “I’ve looked into it. I know what I’m doing.”
Months later, the investment turns sour, the money is gone, and he realises that a little patience and seeking advice could have saved him a great deal of hardship.
Some learn the easy way. Others learn the hard way.
---
Example 4:
“Brother, don’t neglect your parents while they are still with you. Visit them, serve them and make the most of the time you have with them.”
Response: “I’m busy. I’ll see them when I get the chance.”
Then one day, the phone rings with news he never expected.
Suddenly, all those things he thought he would do “one day” can no longer be done.
He wishes he had listened when the advice was given.
Some learn the easy way. Others learn the hard way.

Clarification Regarding the Sisters’ Area
We would like to clarify the current arrangements regarding the area downstairs that has been used for sisters.
The downstairs section does not belong to Masjid As-Sahabah at present. It has been a rented space that we have been using temporarily to accommodate our sisters.
Therefore, at this stage, the masjid does not have a designated sisters’ section.
In shā’ Allāh, we will be putting up curtains upstairs to create a sisters’ section. However, due to the fact that there is only one entrance to the upstairs hall, we will unfortunately not be able to accommodate sisters for general activities and prayers there at this time. The upstairs sisters’ area will primarily be available for Madrasah classes and duroos, where suitable arrangements can be made.
We sincerely ask our sisters to bear with us during this transitional period. Our sisters are the backbone of this da‘wah, and we greatly value your presence, support and participation.
We are doing our best to find better and more suitable solutions that will allow us to accommodate sister-friendly activities and a proper sisters’ section, bi-idhnillāh.
May Allah reward you all for your patience, understanding and continued support of Masjid As-Sahabah.
