Want to rant, vent or exhale your frustration? The issue with how Africa is shown on maps comes down to distortions in map projections, especially the widely used Mercator projection: 1. Why Mercator was made Designed in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator to help sailors navigate. It preserved compass directions (rhumb lines = straight lines), making sea travel easier. To achieve this, the map stretched areas near the poles and shrunk those near the equator. 2. How Africa is distorted Africa = 30 million sq. km. Greenland = 2.1 million sq. km. → Yet Mercator shows them as roughly the same size. Europe looks as big as Africa, though it’s only one-third the size. Canada, Russia, and northern Europe look oversized, while Africa, South America, and India appear diminished. This shrinking of Africa has been criticized as reinforcing the idea that Africa is less important or marginal. 3. Why distortions happen It’s impossible to flatten a globe onto a rectangle without distortion. Mapmakers must choose what to preserve: area, shape, distance, or direction. Mercator preserves shape and angles, but sacrifices size (area). 4. Impact on Africa The Mercator map subtly reinforced colonial and political biases. Africa looked “small and conquerable” in the colonial era and “irrelevant” today. The African Union (AU) calls it a form of symbolic marginalisation. 5. Alternatives to Mercator Equal Earth projection (2018): Preserves relative size, but continents look slightly curved. Gall-Peters projection (1970s): Preserves size but stretches continents vertically. Orthographic projection: Shows Earth like from space, but only one hemisphere at a time. Upside-down maps (like Stuart McArthur’s 1979 version): Challenge the idea that north must be “up.” 6. What’s happening now The African Union has endorsed the “Correct the Map” campaign. Institutions like the World Bank, National Geographic, and NASA are shifting to Equal Earth. Google Maps added a 3D globe (2018) but still defaults to Mercator on mobile. Replacing Mercator means revising school textbooks, curricula, and digital platforms—a big task, given centuries of habit. --- 👉 In short: The problem isn’t just technical—it’s political. By shrinking Africa, the Mercator projection also shrank its perceived importance. The AU’s push is about restoring geographical accuracy and cultural dignity. @examtime91

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) Composition : Primarily Propane ($C_3H_8$) and Butane ($C_4H_{10}$). Origin : By-product of crude oil refining and natural gas processing. Status: Stored as liquid under pressure; used for domestic (PM Ujjwala), industrial, and commercial fuel. India’s LPG Dynamics Dependence: ~60–66% imported; only ~34–40% produced domestically. Demand Drivers : Urbanization and the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Major Suppliers : Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and increasingly the USA. Geopolitics & Energy Security Chokepoint: >90% of imports transit the Strait of Hormuz. Strategic Risk : High vulnerability to West Asian instability and maritime disruptions. Policy Goal: Diversification of suppliers to mitigate "single-region" dependency. Natural Gas: Global Context Top Producers : USA (Leader), Russia, Iran, China, and Canada. US Advantage: Massive domestic production provides energy independence and geopolitical leverage.
