I used to be one of the biggest fans of the word consistency.
I remember when I was a student. Sometimes I would sit down with my math textbook (I liked math back then. In fact, it was the only subject I studied regularly 😁) and look at the page number. Most of the times it was around 300–400 pages long.
And I would think, "If I study just 2–3 pages a day, every day, I'll finish this book in about 5–6 months."
And 2–3 pages didn't feel like much. (I know the exercises would take a lot longer, but you get the idea 😁.)
But I never failed not to do it.🥲
Fast forward to today, and I still admire consistency. Doing what you need to do to achieve your goals. But lately I've become more interested in a different question:
What makes people consistent in the first place?
Why do people struggle to stay consistent even when they know it's probably the best thing they can do?
I think part of the answer is knowing why you're trying to be consistent.
Who do you want to become?
What changes in your life if you keep showing up every day?
I think we need to remind ourselves what happens when we do the smallest version of what our future selves do. That's where vision comes in. We need to be able to see our future selves clearly enough to understand why today's actions matter.
And then comes grit.
Because it's not always easy to do what needs to be done. Sometimes your current desires get in the way of your future goals. Sometimes you have to fight yourself. You have to be resilient enough to choose the thing that matters over the thing that feels good right now.
Maybe consistency isn't the real skill after all.
Maybe consistency is what happens when vision and grit meet.
Anyways, go hit the gym😁
